Not helpful for students who do not easily and quickly grasp physics.
By brandon bianchini
This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used. The example problems are very confusing. They do not reference material from earlier chapters so it's easy to get lost in the reasoning behind solving the problem. The actual chapters themselves do very little to explain physics to someone who doesn't easily grasp it. The end of chapter problems also expect you to be gifted in theoretical physics rather than providing building blocks and stepping stones to truly comprehending the material.

Physics textbook with generally clear explanations and relevant real-world applications- much better than Giancoli's text
By N. Raju
As a post-bac student at a local public university, I found this text very helpful in understanding the principles and developing my problem-solving techniques in the second-semester of the algebra-based physics sequence. We had reading quizzes, so I read every chapter that corresponded to the course (chapters 16-30) and thus have much familiarity with the textbook. Walker generally presented clear, in-depth explanations for non-physics majors and provided a variety of worked example problems throughout each chapter. Some reviewers complained that he does not provide enough worked-examples, but you can't expect the author to show how to do every single type of physics problem encountered- the book would be too cumbersome and would defeat the problem-solving nature of physics.

What I appreciated most, however, were the multitude of real-world applications interwoven throughout each chapter. The author eloquently connected the concepts presented to a diverse array of real-world objects and phenomena, such as bimetallic strips (heat), countercurrent exchange in the body (conduction), diesel engines (thermodynamics), printers (electrostatics), keyboards (capacitance), credit card readers (magnetic flux), rainbows (light), CD players (interference), just to name a few. This motivated me tremendously to learn the material, as I realized that all of it relates to our everyday life.

I also found the chapter summaries and conceptual questions at the end of each chapter valuable for testing my understanding. Our class required Mastering Physics, which is an online platform that assigned the same problems as those at the end of each chapter. Walker provided a large variety of problems of easy, medium, and hard difficulty (indicated by the number of dots next to each problem), and doing a large variety of problems was absolutely crucial with developing my confidence in the material. Some of the problems were quite fun, as they related the physics principle to an everyday application. There were some mediocre problems in each chapter, but in my opinion, these were few and far between.

The only issue I had with this text was that some of the sections were not clearly written and thus presented formulas and examples in a confusing way, such as chapter 28 regarding interference. Overall though, I found this text much superior to Giancoli's algebra-based text that I used in AP Physics B in high school; Walker's text gave more concise explanations, more worked-out examples, more diagrams/figures to illustrate the concepts, better homework problems, and more real-world applications. It also appears to be better than Cutnell and Johnson's text too. I highly recommend this text for an introductory physics course and for developing an appreciation of physics that is constantly at work in our daily lives.

The best Physics text I've ever had.
By Kenji Yamasaki
I'm a Physics major, and, although this is an algebra-based book, I still learned the most from this. It is the first Physics book I reach for when something needs clarification or I need to look up a formula. Walker's illustrations and explanations are clear and concise (with a few exceptions), and he covers almost every topic in Physics.

Covered in this volume:

One-Dimensional Kinematics
Vectors in Physics
Two-Dimensional Kinematics
Newton's Laws of Motion
Applications of Newton's Laws
Work and Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy and Conservation of Energy
Linear Momentum and Collisions
Rotational Kinematics and Energy
Rotational Dynamics and Static Equilibrium
Gravity
Oscillations About Equilibrium
Waves and Sound
Fluids
Temperature and Heat
Phases and Phase Changes
The Laws of Thermodynamics

Please note, that this is Volume 1 ONLY of a 2 Volume set. It is true that you can get a hardcover edition of Walker's text, but that hardcover is volumes 1 and 2 together. There is no "Hardcover Volume 1."

Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist: A “stellar collection” of stories about navigating life off the reservation, filled with laughter and heartbreak (People).

In these lyrical, affectionate tales from the author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, characters navigate the crossroads of culture, battle stereotypes, and find themselves through everything from politics to basketball. Richard, the narrator of “Lawyer’s League,” grows up in Seattle, the son of “an African American giant who played defensive end for the University of Washington Huskies” and “a petite Spokane Indian ballerina.” A woman is caught in a restaurant when a suicide bomb goes off in “Can I Get a Witness.” And Estelle Walks Above (ne Estelle Miller), studies her way off the Spokane Indian Reservation and goes on to both enjoy and resent the company of the white women of Seattle—who see her as a shamanic genius, and look to her for guidance on everything from sex and fashion to spirituality.

These and the other “warm, revealing, invitingly roundabout stories” in Ten Little Indians run the gamut from earthy wit to sobering emotional truth, mapping the outer reaches of the human heart (The New York Times Book Review).

From a New York Times–bestselling and National Book Award–winning author, these tales, “rambunctious and exuberant, bristle with an edgy and mordant humor” (Chicago Tribune).

Amazon.com Review
Sherman Alexie, a gifted poet and storyteller, plows familiar yet fertile ground in his third collection of short stories, Ten Little Indians. The book contains nine stories populated by at least one American Indian (usually of Alexie's Spokane heritage, and mostly living in Seattle), but "little" is a bit of a misnomer; the book addresses human (not necessarily Indian), rituals, ceremony, love, loss, insecurity over life choices, and personal sacrifices. A lot of intense basketball is played, too.

When Alexie is at his best, his stories function at a profoundly sad level, where broken down characters are broken down even more, but are fierce-willed enough to attempt Phoenix-like transitions. Unfortunately, the weakest stories appear first, where characters and situations seem far too contrived or forced, the dialogue wooden, and questions or exclamatory sentences appear annoyingly in bunches. In the last half of the book, a married couple, once intensely in love but now lost in life's routines, deal with infidelity ("Do You Know Where I Am?"); a bright basketball prospect attempts a comeback--twenty years after giving up the game ("Whatever Happened to Frank Snake Church?"); and a transient Indian finds his grandmother's regalia in a pawn shop and seeks to quickly raise the lofty purchase price ("What You Pawn I Will Redeem"). Brilliant turns of phrase abound, such as ceremonies being "pitiful cries to a disinterested God," or when a gym rat plays against "Basketball-Democrats who came to the court alone and ran with anybody and Basketball-Republicans who traveled in groups of five and only ran with each other." Ten Little Indians is an uneven collection, but contains some significant, memorable stories. --Michael Ferch

From Publishers Weekly
Fluent, exuberant and supremely confident, this outstanding collection shows Alexie (The Toughest Indian in the World, etc.) at the height of his powers. Humor plays a leading role in the volume's nine stories, but it's love, both romantic and familial, that is the lens through which Alexie examines his compelling characters. His range stretches from the strange to the poignantly antic. In "Can I Get a Witness" an Indian woman is caught inside a restaurant when a suicide bomber blows himself up; in "Do Not Go Gentle" a father buys a vibrator dubbed "Chocolate Thunder" and uses it as a spiritual talisman to successfully bring his seriously injured baby out of a coma. In one of the book's finest stories, "The Search Engine," Corliss Joseph, an intrepid 19-year-old Spokane Indian college student, finds an obscure 1973 volume of Indian poetry and tracks down the author, an aging forklift operator with painful memories of his foray into the literary world. Basketball looms large in a number of these stories, from the thoughtful "Lawyer's League" to the superb final entry, "What Ever Happened to Frank Snake Church?" Loose, jaunty and salted with long, hilarious, inspired riffs-"What kind of life had she created for herself? She was a laboratory mouse lost in the capitalistic maze. She was an underpaid cow paying one-tenth mortgage on a three-bedroom, two-bath abattoir"-these are still cohesive, powerful narratives, expanding on Alexie's continuing theme of what it means to be an Indian culturally, politically and personally. This is a slam dunk collection sure to score with readers everywhere.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Nine extraordinary short stories set in and around the Seattle area, featuring Spokane Indians from all walks of urban life. In "The Search Engine," a student of English poetry stumbles upon a book of poems by another member of her tribe and goes on a vision quest to find him. But no brief description does justice to the rich complexity of this story or the others; adjectives such as incisive, ironic, emotional, political, tragic, triumphant, angry, loving, exuberant, and wise come to mind, and Alexie puts everything together in a deceptively casual, often dazzling way. In bursts of exposition, using colloquial language and uncensored thoughts, he creates characters so richly layered and situations so colorfully detailed that readers finish each tale with a feeling of having encountered a real person or event. They include a woman caught in a terrorist attack; a homeless, alcoholic man on a quest to recapture his grandmother's lost regalia; a lawyer who pays too high a cost for being too focused on his ambition; and a feminist mother, as remembered by her adult son. Woven throughout are themes that satirize Native American images, such as the great storyteller and the spiritual master; yet even as the characters are self-deprecating about these stereotypes, Alexie slyly, in unexpected ways, ultimately demonstrates their truth. Those familiar with this author's earlier work will find his charm, originality, and sheer humanity in full measure here.

Ten Little Indians All Grown Up
By Karen Wills Cunningham
This is a fine set of stories that capture the broad spectrum of urban Native Americans and their lives. Set in Seattle, it depicts the wry humor, desperation, failures and triumphs of Spokane natives living in Seattle. It could only have been written by one who knows them well.

Entertaining, thought provoking, inspiring
By mwright
I usually am a reader of novels, not so often short stories. This collection really caught my attention, and I devoured them one after another in one sitting. They made me think about my own life even though my heritage is not Native American, and I am inspired to write my own!

It's supposed to look like a hockey stick: up and to the right. Growth curves of runaway hits are even more dramatic—akin to field hockey sticks—quick start, short dip, followed by an immediate near-vertical climb in a northeasterly direction. It’s a beautiful thing. The problem with growth curves is that they’re like footprints in the sand. You can only see them in hindsight. To make matters more difficult, innovation is a non-linear business. Success does not come in the form of a straight line. As Woody Allen suggests, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.”

In the world of innovation, there is no single path forward. The only road that all entrepreneurs share is the road less travelled by. But you can still learn from those who went before you—what to do and what not to do—in order to increase your odds of success.

Bend the Curve is a book about how to get more out of your big idea from people who know—successful entrepreneurs, the venture capitalists who've funded them, and the experienced mentors of the world's leading new venture accelerator, Techstars.

"Andrew Razeghi has tirelessly captured the brilliance and insights of over a dozen of our most sought-after mentors. As I read this book the first time, the voices and ideas within it challenged my own long-held beliefs and added to my own stock of wisdom. As I read it a second time, I wished that I could apply to Techstars."

"As an entrepreneur and investor, I have had the good fortune of working alongside the mentors featured in BEND THE CURVE for many years. Individually, their pearls of wisdom are like gold to a startup. Collectively however, to have their advice woven together by Andrew Razeghi into a single book is priceless. I'm thrilled to see it shared with the rest of the world!"

This is definitely on my short-list of recommended books for entrepreneurs
By Adam J. Louras
I devoured this book. As an entrepreneur myself, I have a short list of books that I always recommend to anyone getting into the world of consumer products: Mission in a Bottle, Rubies in the Orchard, Brand Hijack, and now Bend the Curve. I've added this book for one reason - it's useful. This book is filled with practical advice, it takes a no nonsense approach, and it is fun to read. The wisdom of the entrepreneurs that were interviewed is expertly woven with the authors own insights. Innovation is an extremely difficult subject to write about because it is typically backward looking at the success of others that have innovated. While a backward looking approach makes for great motivation and a fun read, it is limited in its practical application because once innovation is exposed, it really isn't that innovative anymore. This is quite a paradox. This book gave me the tools to systematically introduce innovative thinking into my business and helped me to create new products in our pipeline. This isn't "pie in the sky" type of innovation, rather, it got into the nuts and bolts of actually creating new things and pushing the envelope of my thinking.

Great Read
By Matt H.
Bend The Curve is a great, accessible read. Andrew Razeghi teaches startup lessons through the eyes of multiple successful startup founders, many with links to Chicago. He invokes advice from a broad array of people -- from Steve Blank to Benjamin Franklin to the band Wilco -- drawing startup lessons from each. Bend The Curve is for anyone who has, as Razeghi puts it, "a penchant for problem solving and a bias towards action."

If you are thinking about starting a company or know someone starting a company BUY this book...Do not hesitate. Not only does it have great insight into what it takes to truly be successful in the world of start-ups today, but it also has incredible stories of extremely successful entrepreneurs like Chuck Templeton (Opentable, Grubhub, etc.) and Jason Fried (37Signals/Basecamp). In addition, the book features stories and insights from other entrepreneurs who you have probably not heard of yet but offer invaluable advice. Razeghi nails it with this must read for any aspiring entrepreneur...

I read this book 50 years ago and enjoyed it. Now, as an adult, I am reading it again and enjoying things that I missed the first time around, such as the great prose.

A Lost Classic
By Robert Russin
"Spring came late in the year 1890, and the fullness of its burgeoning heightened the seasonal disturbance that made unquiet in the blood. "

So begins King's Row, Henry Bellamann's wonderful novel that I am calling a lost American classic. Despite being a critical and commercial success on its release in 1940, leading to a film version with Ronald Reagan two years later, King's Row and the rest of Bellamann's works are largely forgotten today.

This is unfortunate, as King's Row is a novel that should be appreciated both for the skill of its construction and the richness of its ideas. It's an important novel from a cultural and historical context, and there's nothing else quite like it.

At first, King's Row almost seems as if it could pass as just another slice of small town Americana, no more daring or cutting than a Norman Rockwell painting -- a safer and gentler Peyton Place. However, as the story unfolds, it reveals surprising depths of darkness, using beautiful prose to reveal some very ugly truths about the human mind and the civilization that it creates.

There is a lot going on here. Over the course of almost 700 pages, we are given premarital sex (lots of it), mental illness, atheism, incest, sexual abuse, a mad doctor, a sadistic surgeon, and probably most scandalous of all, a same sex kiss! You would think that in 1940 this book would have been banned faster than a gay porn version of Jesus of Nazareth, thus solidifying its permanent place in cultural memory (an amusing fact that book banners never seem to grasp), but somehow it seems to have slipped under the radar.

Bellamann succeeds in creating a town that is believable and compelling, with a large cast of characters that initially seem like quiet players in any American small town. Fairly early on we are given the jarring and incongruous image of a nearby insane asylum that looms over the town both literally and figuratively. It is here that young Parris Mitchell aspires to work as a doctor one day. Parris is coming of age at a time when the field of psychology was in its infancy, and the study of mental illness was a new and exciting (and controversial) field. This clash of science and technology against religion and tradition not only works as a brilliant way of allegorically juxtaposing the coming of age of a generation with the coming of age of an entire nation, but also serves as a fascinating bit of historical fiction.

Contrasting sharply to Parris's quiet and studious nature is his best (and, often, only) friend Drake McHugh, a wild and carefree spirit that balks at the suffocating and narrow-minded restrictions of the day. Drake is probably the most fully realized character in this story, combining a thoughtless vitality with a surprising amount of empathy and concern for others, something not always present in many of fiction's great lovable free spirits. Bellamann uses these characters as a clever and interesting tool to bring us into this world. Through Parris's Apollonian lens we get to see the ideas and thoughts of the day, and through Drake's decidedly Dionysian filter we see actions, and the consequences of balking convention in small town America.

To call this a coming of age tale is to place too narrow a restriction on what is actually a much larger story. Over the span of roughly two decades, we not only see characters grow and change, but we see a town -- and, indeed, a civilization -- going through a painful growth spurt. And, while some of it is expected (we can infer that the story of Parris and Cassandra, with their curiously Homeric names, will end tragically), occasionally there are sharp twists and turns that managed to surprise even me, a very jaded reader (I won't spoil anything, but there are some moments that would have made the likes of Poe and Lovecraft very proud).

This is a very philosophical novel, with some very large ideas and concepts written in prose that is elegant without being stuffy, and informative without being pedantic. There is both naivety and bitterness, beauty and tragedy, gentleness and brutality, and while it is clear that Bellamann himself was frustrated by much of small town society and its narrowness of scope, he presents a balanced enough viewpoint so that the novel doesn't fall into bleak condemnation of an entire culture. This was clearly the work of a brilliant mind, and if there is a flaw here it's that occasionally the characters all seem almost too smart, and have developed too deep an understanding of human nature based on their limited surroundings and experiences. Though, really, this a refreshing critique in light of how seldom one encounters this problem either in fiction or in real life.

Unfortunately, this novel has now gone out of print (I had to order mine from Amazon). If you can find a cheap copy of this book somewhere, I highly recommend picking it up. It's my hope that by talking about this novel as much as possible and (and by being annoying enough about it) that I can help generate enough interest in getting it out into the world once again. It is too beautiful, smart, sad, tragic, and compelling of a story to be lost to antiquity, and showcases a fascinating period of American history that I think we could learn a lot from by studying in 2013. This could be your town or mine!
By LindaT
I read Bellaman's books in reverse order -- my first one was PARRIS MITCHELL OF KING'S ROW -- that was the one we had at our home at the time. I read this one later. But order of reading notwithstanding, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, although some parts were disturbing. This is a realistic view of human nature in a small town (based on Fulton, Missouri, a location that could be considered both southern and midwestern).

This book is a series of interconnected events connecting a lot of characters and situations. There are many characters but most of it centers around Parris Mitchell and Drake McHugh. The book shows evil as well as good, and I'm guessing that at the time it was written, the sexual matters were quite shocking to read. But most readers will know that this sort of thing has been going on for a long time, even in the more so-called "hushed up" times when this book was written.

It's been compared to PEYTON PLACE, and I can understand why. Although the circumstances in each book were different, the character of Fullmer Green in this book is similar to Leslie Harrington in PEYTON PLACE in that they were both power-hungry people who wanted to dominate others. In fact, a good friend of mine, when she was describing PEYTON PLACE gave a description of Fullmer when she was trying to explain Leslie Harrington! (She got them mixed up)

Bellamann is a master of realism as well as good at creating characters real-life challenges. When I finished reading this book, I felt like I could find my way around the town of King's Row! Above all, he shows that King's Row, like any town, is probably neither good nor bad; it's a town; a place, and the people determine what it is. When you finish the book, you get the idea that the author still loves the town -- it's his own.

This book will grab your attention, for sure!

This is sheer brilliance, printed. Just add crayons.
By Andrew
OMG! I've scribbled away on every sheet of paper that I've ever had in front of me. No pen, pencil or crayon has ever survived in my immediate vicinity. And this book NOURISHES the desire to color and doodle!. Oh, I really wish I could rewind the clock decades to when I had a single digit age, to a lazy, sunny day with nothing better to do, a coffee can full of pencils and a sharpener and all the blue freezie-pops I could eat, and this amazing coloring book in front of me. This is sheer genius, printed and shared with the world. Inspired. Brilliant. Genius. Seriously, this is something to be treasured. Thank you, Souris, for this amazing book. It's gonna get destroyed. And then I'll get another and another, for all the kids on my xmas list.

It looks like EXACTLY what I like to doodle and observe
By Braxton Simpson
I'm a 16 year old with a very artistic and creative mind and I went searching for a coloring book to not only color, but to provide me with inspiration for my own artwork. The cover for this book is what grabbed my attention. It looks like EXACTLY what I like to doodle and observe. The sample of this book on Amazon only had a few pictures to judge, but the reviews promised a book full of beautiful artwork to improve upon with color.

When I got the book, I excitedly opened it up and soaked in all the beautiful artwork.

Now some of the art in this book is too good to color than I tore it out and hung it on my wall, while some other pieces are too complicated to color without fine tip art products. And of course, if you've read other reviews, there are two pages of just black ink. But the rest of the book is perfect for coloring and really lets you add your own touch to other artist's work.

The book is amazing and creative and a very good idea, if there was ever another collection of works like these I would by the book in a heartbeat.

A treasure of contemporary art!
By Graham Stewart
I originally bought this book for my nine year old daughter but after looking at it I think I am going to keep it for myself. I am not an expert on the contemporary art 'scene' (I am not as hip as I once thought I was) but this book is a great primer for what is happening right now in art. The diversity of the works in this book are amazing! Pieces from graphic designers, cartoonists, street artists, and illustrators are included. I especially like the way that the author left the back side of the works blank except for the authors name and web page. That has been a coloring book pet peeve of mine ever since I was a kid. I have taken the time to explore some of the artists through their web pages and I am astounded at two things. First, I love seeing the artist's work the way that THEY decided to color it and I love learning more about each artist and seeing other examples of their work.

I teach middle school and I am going to have an opportunity to use this book in a few ways. I teach an elective to 7th and 8th graders, it is basically art for people who aren't artists. This book will be a tremendous resource for me to plan a unit on what is happening in art right now. Also, have you ever given a 7th grader crayons and just let them color? I never have but I am eager to give my students examples of contemporary art from this book to color as I teach them about specific artists or styles. What a great learning tool for me AND the students.

Looks like I am gong to be buying a few of these books for my students. Can I get a bulk discount? :-)
