What's the big deal about big brains? They're a costly enhancement, says neurobiologist John Allman in Evolving Brains. "Animals with big brains are rare," he stresses. "If brains enable animals to adapt to changing environments, why is it that so few animals have large brains? The reason is that big brains are very expensive." He examines the whys and wherefores of large-brain evolution, and draws out the connections between large brains and long lives; shows why major evolutionary advances are often made by small predators; makes you appreciate why mammals, burdened by the cost of warm-bloodedness, were unable to unseat the dinosaurs; and more. So, while large brains such as the ones we humans enjoy may give survival advantages to individuals, some species have done (and did) just fine for millions of years with pea brains.

Rather than talking only about cells, circuits, neurotransmitters, and genes, or gliding up to the ethereal regions of psychology and philosophy, Allman looks at the whole organism--the "middle-sized, middle-distanced objects," as Willard Van Orman Quine said. "Brains exist because the distribution of resources necessary for survival and the hazards that threaten survival vary in space and time," Allman writes. Even single-celled organisms such as bacteria have brainlike functions that enable them to find food and avoid toxins. Starting with the brainlike activity of Escherichia coli, the populous bacterial tenants of our intestines, Allman (professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology) traces the development of brains from small to large, simple to complex. His account focuses on three themes: "that the essential role of brains is to serve as a buffer against environmental variation; that every evolutionary advance in the nervous system has a cost; and that the development of the brain to the level of complexity we enjoy--and that makes our lives so rich--depended on the establishment of the human family as a social and reproductive unit." From that level of complexity he asks an intriguing question: Why has the human brain become smaller in the past 35,000 years? His answer: "The domestication of plants and animals as sources of food and clothing served as major buffers against environmental variability. Perhaps humans, through the invention of agriculture and other cultural means for reducing the hazards of existence, have domesticated themselves."

Humans share a desire to explain our place in nature and through such explanations to make sense of our unique role on earth. In his new book, Evolving Brains, John Allman, a distinguished comparative neuroscientist, takes on this fundamental question from the perspective of brain evolution. One of his central themes is that duplication was fundamental in the evolution of brains. Gene duplications could provide a substrate for diversification of structures that would expand the brain's repertoire. In a beautifully illustrated part of the book, Allman traces the evolution of warm-blooded animals, weaving together modern neuroscientific findings with anthropological data. In the discussion of primate brains, Allman is particularly insightful. He eludicates the evolutionary forces that led to brain specializations. For example, fruit-eating primates have larger relative brain sizes than leaf-eating primates. Evolving Brains is a wonderful read. Trip's Retribution is my first Aden Lowe book. Why haven't I read the rest of this series? No clue, but it's definitely on my TBR list now.
As a first time reader I'm happy to say this book has it all, it's well written, flows well and sucked me in from chapter one forcing me to read it from cover to cover in one sitting!
A story line I could not put down, I can neither confirm nor deny the fact that my family may or may not have had to fend for themselves while I was immersed in Trip's story!!

Trip is sent to the Saxon's clubhouse on business, while there he meets Tanya. Something about her makes him want to protect her, seeing the way she and the other women are treated disgusts him. Hell Raider's respect their women, Saxon's clearly do not.
He tries to get her leave with him but she refuses fearing the Saxon's will find and kill her.
Trip doesn't want feel right leaving her there but it's her decision and he has to respect it.

Two years later their paths cross again and this time she accepts his offer,
Not knowing what to expect at yet another MC she's sure it can't be quite as bad as being a Saxon slave.
Tanya settles into life with Trip, he helps her build a life, never pushing himself on her.
This is both a comfort and a concern for her, doesn't he want her?
Trip's a great man, he can be tough when needed but he always puts Tanya's needs before his. Giving her time to decide if she truly wants him, not just wanting to pay him back for saving her, helping her start over free of the horror she suffered at the hands of the Saxon MC.

And just when things are headed in the right direction, someones coming for Tanya. The best way to hut him is to take whats his and that means Tanya....

Trip's Retribution had a touch of everything I look for in a great MC Story. Suspense, lust, sexy badass bikers who may have a good heart. and a little romance,
This book has made me a huge Aden Lowe fan, I can't wait to grab the rest of this series and look forward to what comes next.

Hell’s Raider MC are not by any means perfect they can be hell raising but they have morals ...

Trip is VP of the Hell’s Raiders MC 2 years ago he was sent on a run to negotiate some business with some other MC clubs, little did Trip realize he was going to get more then he bargained for.

A part at the Saxon’s MC club house wasn’t on trips agenda he wanted to get in get his business done and get the hell out of there little did he know what he was about to uncover.

Hell’s Raider MC are not by any means perfect they can be hell raising but they have morals and sex trafficking and slavery isn’t on their agenda and never will be, but it high on Saxon’s MC agenda.

Trip is offered some women to take his pick from even though he doesn’t want to he can’t be disrespectful in another MC’s house, that’s when he sees her.

So frail.

So scared.

He needs her.

He wants her.

He can’t take her.

After a s*** storm breaks out at the Saxon’s MC party Trip and his brother take it as there que to leave he wants Tanya to go with him but she refuses she wants to continue to be there slave in fear of them finding her.

He has to leave

He has to leave her there.

Fast forward 2 years……

Everything in his gut is telling him to go home and check her, that they have her when Trip gets home she is gone, he has her.

Will Trip get Tanya back?

Will they use her for slavery again?

Or will they kill her before he finds her?

We really loved Trip and Tanya’s story the way that Trip was so gentle with her and waited til he was absolutely sure she wanted him. Love the Hell’s Raiders boys there all so sweet and gentle when they need to be!

Well done Aden on another great book!

Trip’s Retribution is book 3 in the Hell Raiders MC series and my first Aden Lowe book, but certainly not my last! I have already added the others to my TBR.

I LOVE a good MC story and this one didn’t disappoint! I devoured this book in one sitting. Trip is the VP for Hell’s Raiders and is sent to the Saxon’s MC club house to negotiate a deal. Their VP offers them up a woman of their choice and the minute he sees her, he wants her…Tanya. Trip can tell right away she is scared, nervous and not a willing participant. Even though he wants her badly, something about her calls to his protective side. When all hell breaks loose, he tries to get her to leave, but she refuses because she knows if they ever catch her, they will kill them both.

I love how Trip struggles with having to leave her and can’t stop thinking about her, and as fate would have it, they cross paths again and he rescues her. He never pressures her for more. He waits for her to be ready for him. Fast forward 2 years, and her past comes back to haunt her. I love how Tanya grows into such a strong woman and overcomes being just the helpless victim.

I loved everything about this book. It’s a breath of fresh air to find some members of an MC that actually have some morals left and aren’t total animals as indicated in the Saxon MC. Can I just add that I loved what happens to Buffalo? Wrong as that may be, he deserved everything he got.

Maathai, a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, presents a matter-of-fact account of her rather exceptional life in Kenya. Born in 1940, Matthai attended primary school at a time when Kenyan girls were not educated; went on to earn a Ph.D. and became head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Nairobi before founding Kenya's Green Belt Movement in 1977, which mobilized thousands of women to plant trees in an effort to restore the country's indigenous forests. Because Kenya's environmental degradation was largely due to the policies of a corrupt government, she then made the Green Belt Movement part of a broader campaign for democracy. Maathai endured personal attacks by the ruling powers-President Moi denounced her as a "wayward" woman-and engaged in political activities that landed her in jail several times. When a new government came into power in 2002, she was elected to Parliament and appointed assistant minister in the Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources. Inspiring but sometimes contradictory

I enjoyed reading Wangari Maathai's memoir, especially her childhood, and journey to early adulthood, and the final years of her work after she won the Nobel Prize. Her struggle to protect Kenyan forests and promote women's rights and advocate for environmental protection through the Green Belt Movement, especially under a repressive government regime, is admirable and inspiring.

Two things I struggled with as I read about her work with the Green Belt Movement are her tendencies to belittle Kenyans and portray herself as an absolute victim.

Because of her work, Maathai was constantly harassed by local government authorities. During these moments, she would appeal to her international networks of friends and colleagues to encourage the Kenyan Government to put the environment before destructive developmental projects, arguing that Kenyans are too busy trying to earn a living, or not as aware of environmental conservation as people in the West are. This is a contradiction with what she claims several times about generations past who had systems of protecting the environment. She even demonstrates it through stories about growing up amongst lush rivers and forested areas in the forties and fifties.

One of my heroes

One of my heroes! Kenya's Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel peace prize; she was also a fearless activist for democracy, women's rights, and sustainable development, and a brilliant story teller, too! I used the book in a number of college courses, to great avail. Many students found her story inspirational, unique and clearly told.

Great Biography

I read a copy and then bought several to give to friends. Wangari is an incredible woman who starts by giving a good background on the effects of colonialization of Africa socially, politically and environmentally. As a founder of the Green Belt Movement she has been through incredible things, sometimes horrific in nature, yet she has the ability to step back and analyze the events so well. No wonder she won a Noble Prize. This book should be required reading.

An Example of Boas' Eclectic Interests

Boas was a German Jewish immigrant who learned other languages and became versed in arts and music before he set out to study the color of Artic ice under different conditions for a degree in physics. Fortunately, he found the Inuit (Eskimo) more interesting and became an ethnographer and anthropologist. After settling in the United States and establishing a department of anthropology, he found American Indians in danger of extinction (a common misbelief at the time).
He sent students to various culture areas while he undertook studies of Indians on the Northwest Coast. He gave us details of their ethnography, and he was fascinted with their art. The result was this book surveying Indian art in general while detailing Northwest Coast art in particular.
Many coffee table books now illustrate Native American art in much greater detail, but the Boas' book is a classic that reads well.

Disappointment

I am a full time faculty surgeon for a surgical residency program. We purchased this book for our residents based upon its previous excellent performance and very recent publication. I have been reading various surgical texts for year including Sabiston and this edition is a disappointment.

There are the usual mispellings and grammatical errors which seem to be more frequent than one might expect. In addition however, in more than one chapter are sentences which just don't make sense. An example: Page 122 Sabiston 19th ed "As a source of calories, 1 g of carbohydrate yields 3.4 kcal (16kJ) of protein, and 4 kcal (17kJ) yields 9kcal(37kJ) of fat." Or this example: Reference to a table on page 1711 (table 63-6), which although present in another chapter, has no bearing on the subject at hand.

Surgical texbooks such as Sabiston form the underpinning of resident surgical education. Residents exposed to this material for the first time should not have to wonder what a sentence truly means or where a table or figure might be. The content is good and the illustrations are very good, but for nearly $200, I would have expected a better job of editing, especially for a text with the previously excellent reputation of Sabiston.

19th Edition Extremely disappointing...DO NOT BUY!

I am the owner of a 17th edition...excellent book in its time when i was a medical student rotating in surgery. The 18th came out....but i had the computerized version so i upgraded naturally. I eventually decided I was fed up reading it on a screen so i pre-ordered this 19th edition since nov/dec 2011 hoping it would be better than the 18th. Eager to open the box like a child on christmas day, I started reading it. As a surgical resident, this book is not a step down but a probably ten floors down from what it should be.

Comparing the 17th and 18th to this 19th edition: alot of vital and critical information has been omitted. In fact if you read this you are likely to not to benefit much in terms of new knowledge. If this is your first sabiston then you may be like wow buy if you know what the potential of this book was previously....you may probably fling the 19th edition out the window.

In my opinion this is a GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT for me and a waste of USD $160.49. I can even sell it cause its underpar and no other surgical resident will want it. I regret not buying the 18th edition instead.

If you are a medical student and want a brief overview....good book for you.

If you want to be a surgeon, poor book, they have skipped over alot of pathophysiology, surgical anatomy, anomalies, etc....its a long list. This book is just a disaster.

About the Author

Richard S. Cohen is Associate Professor of South Asian Religious Literatures at the University of California, San Diego. This is his first book, though he has published numerous articles in such venues as the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and History of Religions. He is now working on a study of Buddhism and counterculture.

Not worth the time

This book has some interesting dimensions but seems to get a little lost in a tangle of overextended academic theories and a tendency to grossly overstate points.

The author makes the valid point that we must be careful about applying our concepts of what is "Buddhist" retroactively onto far removed times, places and people. But for all of his sensitivities to such things, he is strangely overdeterministic at times. For instance, he hypostatizes that because the Zen "rhetoric of immediacy" has been "enlisted in nativist, nationalist, militarist and sectarian purposes," anyone whose value system has been "informed" by Zen Buddhism is "an unwitting tool of medieval Japanese media-moguls just as certainly as the kid who thinks that he is merely obeying his thirst when he buys a Sprite." Uh, really? Does he not consider that some people simply happen to find a rhetoric of immediacy useful in their lives (and others happen to genuinely enjoy Sprite)?

This tendency to overstate points riddles the whole book. To give another example, he quarrels with the idea that the Ajanta caves should be construed as primarily Buddhist (or Bauddha, as he prefers) because Hindus utilized them for other purposed in the 19th century. Taking it a bit far, I would say.

Cohen says that he finds the Dalai Lama's assertion "there is every reason to appreciate and respect all forms of spiritual practice" to be "no less disturbing" than Tom Delay's statement to a group of Christian supremacists that "only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and though, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world--only Christianity." Really, he finds equivalence there? I understand his underlying point, but once again he way overstates it.

Cohen does do a good job comparing the claims of both Goenka and Richard Hayes to have distilled "what the Buddha really" taught, skewering their presumptions rather delightfully. But no sooner has Cohen finished this chapter than he obnoxiously proposes his own (rather incoherent) new and improved moral philosophy in the last chapter of the book. Thanks, but no thanks.

Great book. Highly recommended.

Sandeep was the instructor for our E-commerce MBA class (University of Washington Bothell, Class of 2002), and we had the pleasure of 'revewing' initial drafts of some of the book's chapters. Most e-commerce books have been written by IS professionals and academics, focusing on information architechture and process redesign. A key reason for my preference of this book over other similar books, is the author's big-picture yet detailed focus on business models, maketing and technology (technical overview of the Internet). I suspect the author's background in marketing played an important role in designing this book with this three-pronged, interdisciplinary approach.

A useful text!!

My Husband teaches third and fourth year university students, and found this to a valuable resource for an e-commerce management paper. His comments:

This is well written (interesting even!) and informative on business models and relatively current cases, the book avoids getting into technical detail. Excellent for the purpose of getting IT strong students to think about where they fit and how their skills can complement others.

I would suggest that this text be useful for senior IT or Management students alike.
