Comprehensive but has MSFT "blinders"

These books are well written and comprehensive. Most of the explanations are clear, reasonably concise, and fairly complete, and the books teach a great deal by prose, example, and practice. They are, by far, the best resources I have used yet.

But they still suffer from what I call "Microsoft blindness", the ingrained assumption that the reader (a) has worked extensively in the Microsoft space and (b) has never worked anywhere else. There's a Microsoft Mindset that the writers assume the readers have, and if you happen to be experienced in non-Microsoft technologies, it's almost like reading in a foreign language. If you speak the language well but not fluently, you can translate it, but you struggle to "think" in Microsoft -- or, at least, I do, having long non-Microsoft experience before entering the Microsoft world.

These books could be improved substantially if the writers kept in mind that some readers come from other environments, even if they just did it in sidebars with a signpost here and there, for the things that are quite reasonably obvious to Microsoft devotees that aren't obvious at all to those coming from the outside. One example of many is ongoing references to the .Net development framework. If you haven't developed code for Windows, which is quite possible for an incoming system administrator, many of the .Net references will make little sense, while to a .Net developer they are obvious and intrinsic to the environment.

Microsoft has simultaneously gotten better about playing well with other technologies while making their own more and more comprehensive. Their authors and editors should keep that in mind for future editions.

Preps for half the material.

These books are touted as comprehensive training kits to achieve certification, however; the material in the books only contain about 60% of what is actually needed.

I would not recommend these books to anyone serious about passing the examines. These should be considered reference and not prep.

I would have dropped it to one star as it's so misleading, but there are some valuable bits of info here.

I've read a few pages of all the books from this set. I've found the information very useful. The exercises at the end of each section help to reinforce the learning of the concepts covered throughout the chapters. Even if the step by steps directions do not always give the expected results, but as a network administrator or future network adminstrator you should be comfortable to figure out the problems and make educated guess as how to accomplish certain tasks based on the understanding of the concepts behind "click here and click there". Overall it is a good set of books to learn windows server 2008 r2.

About the Author
Gary W. Cox is a professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego. In addition to numerous articles in the areas of legislative and electoral politics, he is author of The Efficient Secret (winner of the Samuel H. Beer dissertation prize in 1983), coauthor of Legislative Leviathan (winner of the Richard F. Fenno Prize in 1993), and author of Making Votes Count: Strategic Coordination in the World's Electoral Systems (1997), which was awarded APSA's awards for the best book in political science (Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award), the best book in comparative politics (Gregory Luebbert Prize), and for the best book in political economy. His latest book, Elbridge Gerry's Salamander, analyzes the political consequences of the reapportionment revolution in the United States. Cox is a former Guggenheim Fellow and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996.

Mathew D. McCubbins is a professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego. His authored works include Legislative Leviathan: Party Government in the House (1993); Under the Watchful Eye: Managing Presidential Campaigns in the Television Era (1992); Recent co-edited books include The Origins of Liberty: Political and Economic Liberalization in the Modern World (1997); and Elements of Reason: Cognition, Choice, and the Bounds of Rationality (2000). His most recent book is Stealing the Initiative: How State Government Responds to Direct Democracy (2001) with Elisabeth Gerber, Arthur Lupia, and D. Roderick Kiewiet. McCubbins is also the author of numerous articles in journals such as Legislative Studies Quarterly; Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization; Law and Contemporary Problems; and the American Journal of Political Science. He is the coordinator of the Law and the Behavioral Sciences Project and was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences for 1994-95.

A new look at parties

This book is really aimed at pushing the procedural cartel theory of political parties, which basically argues that parties are organized in order to monopolize the rules of the legislature, not exclusively to win votes or pass substantive bills. The authors use a mix of game theoretic models and anecdotes to drive their point. Definitely a contribution to the Congress literature.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

About the Author
After receiving her MA in Music History and Literature at Arizona State University, Jean Ferris taught Music History and Appreciation at ASU. What a shame to be OOP

I'll be brief. This amazing gem of a novel has gone relatively undiscovered for far too long. As is typical with much of Crews' writing, the characters are harsh but endearing, the landscapes bleak but strangely familiar, and the wordplay grim but hopeful. It's tragic that the only place one might find this is tucked away in an old library (or here for a ridiculous price). Check out a copy, or borrow one, but read this book! And, for the love of all that is good and sacred, skip the awful film version that slaughtered everything amazing about the novel.

One of Crews' best

One of Crews' rarer books, fluidly and impressively written, about grieving, death, change, obsession, individuality, and what it is to be human. I was very moved by this story, and know that it must have been cathartic and hopefully helpful to Crews to write, as the loss of his firstborn young son in a tragic drowning accident inspired the story. This is a great novel for anyone, but perhaps especially so to those interested in gritty Southern literature, hawks and falcons, death and grieving, Gainesville Florida, and the ways in which family and society try to make individuals conform. Highly recommended. The film adaptation is worthwhile and overall quite true to the novel, but make sure you read the novel as well. I miss Mr. Crews. This particular book is harder to find than his others, but very worth it.

Anyone who's lived in, or lived near Gainesville FL, knows of Paines Prairie. It's a spot on the earth that tells you what it's about. Mr. Crews wisely uses the prairie as a backdrop/character and goes from there. Read it!
