Generic Advice for the Generic Sales Pro

It's not that the advice in the book is "bad". It's just "tired".

Page after page I kept waiting for the author to say anything new, breakthrough or useful. Instead, the advice is decades old and written about in the most generic voice possible. Nothing leaps off the page. The author has no new ways to express old ideas. He just packages it all into his umbrella "DNA Selling Formula". New name, same content.

He uses historical stories to frame his advice, like telling the story of army generals who sent spies into their own ranks to find out the men's morale. His point? A salesperson needs inside info in order to make the sale. Guess what? We don't need the history lesson at all. If you just state "get some inside info", that's straightforward enough.

Overall, if you read this book, you'll know what most salespeople know from other books that are out there.

Fantastic Book!

Winning Sales Presentations blew me away. I was expecting a typical, "look people in the eyes, don't chew gum or put your hands in your pockets" book--but instead learned fantastic techniques and strategies to apply before, during, and after presentations. I also enjoyed how the book is geared for professional presenters and B2B, complex settings. A great book.

Great Book for Sales Engineers

I saw Patrick Henry Hasnsen at a sales kick off meeting in Upstate New York. He is an excellent author and great speaker - All of his books are well done. I like this book best of all. As a sales engineer, I have to create winning presentations in the highly competitive telecom industry. This book has helped me do my job better. The book is an easy read and has many reference to history - it is a part of Mr. Hansen's DNA Selling Method series - I suggest you get all four books!

wildly helpful

I know diddly squat about sailing, in good weather or foul. Well I do know that the stick things are supposed to point up, and the rounded enclosed part is supposed to stay down and wet on the outside, while dry and toasty on the inside. This book was an enormous help in at least giving me things to think about while looking for a boat, then planning for the inevitable refit required after purchasing said boat. Have to say the first 1/2 of the book was as hard to read as any other text book. However this is one that will remain as useful ten years from now as it is today and will bear frequent rereading. The last 1/2 was more interesting as it showed how different sailors have either succeeded or failed due to either excellent pre-planning or no planning, or just poor luck all the way around. It's hard to ascribe luck though to the folks that spent the time and energy properly planning for horrendous weather while sitting calm and cool in a nice protected harbor. Complacency does indeed kill, or cost you your boat, unless you are very resourceful indeed. It also showed though that monster storms are not frequent. Proper weather reading, appropriate attitude towards staying or leaving, and a willingness to experiment before you get caught in one of these survival storms is very important. One of the things I see frequently is that people that have no clock to punch and no where that they have to be at any particular time, still seem to be driven by a schedule. And so allow this to mix into their decision making process. Anyway good book, tons of great information. Very dense.

The bit I enjoyed most is that all the theory is richly illustrated by the real stories at the end of the book. Another good thing is that this is not a guide for top level boat with a large and experienced crew, attention is paid to difficulty level in applying all the described techniques, like "this can be done by a non-pro couple on a family cruiser", or maybe it will require more hands or effort or skill. About the Author
Cathy Cassidy, is a forensic clinical/ therapist and known for her clinical work with sexual deviants and sex offenders. She does worldwide public speaking on raising awareness on how to prevent sexual abuse and how to tap into the power we have within ourselves to prevent, acknowledge, and if necessary, deal with sexual abuse. She also conducts educational seminars with various professionals, such as law enforcement, the court system, child and family protective services, and educational arenas on topic that enhance imperative knowledge when working with sexual deviants. Ms. Cassidy’s education consists of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and two masters’ degrees; one in counseling psychology and the other in forensics psychology. Throughout her career she has worked on both sides of sexual abuse, with the victims (survivors) and the perpetrators. Without judgment she works with a goal of preventing and aiding the healing process from both sides.

Gripping Story

I enjoyed reading Diamond on the Wall. I found the story interesting and informative. The descriptions of the characters gave you a real picture of who they were. I especially liked the family stories, they added such a personal touch and made the entire story more real for me. In the midst of this horror he shared parts with humor, a relief at times for the reader. The Viet Nam events were gripping and the story left me very frustrated. This was an easy read and I would highly recommend it. Congrats to Larry. Look forward to the movie.

Timothy Corrigan is a Professor of English, Cinema Studies, and History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. His work in Cinema Studies has focused on modern American and contemporary international cinema. He received a BA from the University of Notre Dame, and completed graduate work at the University of Leeds, Emory University, and the University of Paris III. His books include New German Film: The Displaced Image (Indiana UP), The Films of Werner Herzog: Between Mirage and History (Methuen); Writing about Film (Seventh Edition, Longman); A Cinema without Walls: Movies and Culture after Vietnam (Routledge/Rutgers UP); Film and Literature: An Introduction and Reader (Second Edition, Routledge); The Film Experience (Second Edition, Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); Critical Visions: Readings in Classic and Contemporary Film Theory (Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); and The Essay Film: from Montaigne, after Marker (Oxford UP, forthcoming). About the Author
Lynn A. Sandstedt is a native of Colorado and a Ph.D. graduate in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He taught at the University of Northern Colorado for 22 years and served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department and the Department of Hispanic Studies. He was elected to serve on ACTFL Executive and later was elected to serve as president. He was elected president of the AATSP and several years later was selected to be the executive director. Sandstedt has received several prestigious awards for his work in Foreign Language Education.

Ralph Kite earned a Ph.D. in Ibero-American Studies from the University of New Mexico. He spent several years organizing and directing Peace Corps language training programs at New Mexico and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He continued to pursue interests in different teaching and learning approaches (film, computers, and theater) at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he served as chair for 10 years.

Vought F4U Corsair was one of the best and most famous fighters of World War Two era. Developed since 1938, it didn’t see serial production until mid-1942. Initially disqualified for carrier operations, it was handed over to land-based US Marine Corps fighter units. The first volume deals with the design and development phase from the XF4U-1 prototype through F4U-1, F4U-1A and F4U-1D models to F4U-2 night fighter version and the high-altitude XF4U-3 prototype. A separate chapter has been devoted to camouflage and markings of the Corsairs serving with the US Navy and US Marine Corps between 1942 and 1945. Another chapter, based on hundreds of pages from original war diaries of Marine squadrons operating Corsairs, details their operational service during the Solomons campaign and the aerial offensive against the Japanese fortress of Rabaul, covering the period between February 1943 and early 1944. It was in the South Pacific that Corsairs proved their worth and earned a well deserved fame.

A hard book to review

At first glance this book fits right into the long established Monographs series by publisher Kagero. It is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", square bound card cover of 104 pages. It's the 52nd book in the series (no. 3052). It is the first volume devoted to the famous Vought F4U Corsair. But the F4U has already had two books in this series devoted to it (nos. 9 and 26). Why not just reprint those with any corrections or additions? This would make sense for Monograph 9 in any case; the English was very poor.

However, Kagero has gone in a different direction. The present book is completely different from the previous ones. The text is much more extensive and much better translated and supported by well selected black and white photographs. The text is divided into three sections each with its own bibliography and end notes. The first section, pages 3 through 27, covers the background, design and development, and technical description up through the XF4U-3 variants. The second section, pages 28 through 32, cover the camouflage and markings of the aircraft through its entire service history. The third section, pages 33 through 94, is a comprehensive service history of the F4U in the Solomons campaign and the subsequent aerial assault on Rabaul. There is a map on page 92 which is very useful in following movements. There are some appendices covering production, performance, and characteristics of the aircraft in tabular form. The book concludes with 8 pages of color profiles (9 including the rear cover).

There are also some pages out of order. The pages should be read in order 1-42, 44-45, 43, 46-104.

However, the book has none of the extensive drawings that are a normal feature of these series, either the traditional line drawings or the more extensive 3D computer models. Are these planned for subsequent volumes or are the excellent ones in the aforementioned Monographs 9 and 26 supposed to suffice?

In conclusion, it's hard to evaluate this book without knowing what plans are in store for subsequent volumes on the F4U. The book is excellent value as it stands but there is little that can't be found elsewhere. I felt a little cheated without the strong graphical content that this series usually provides.
