Marred by dalliances into the arts and primitiveness
By 2theD
Obviously, reading is my number one hobby because of the time I dedicate to putting my nose in books and putting fingers to the keyboard reviewing the same books. Under the hobby heading of "reading" fall very few genres that I feel drawn to: (1) science fiction, (2) horror, (3) bizarre fiction and (4) Soviet-era travelogues. The former three are easy to come by even in a pinch, but the Soviet-era travelogues are difficult to procure. I've only read two, but I've been transfixed ever since my first read: Elizabeth Pond's From the From the Yaroslavsky Station (1981) and Colin Thubon's Where Nights Are Longest (1983).

Laurens van der Post's rather pretentious Journey in Russia (1964) is my third Soviet-era travelogue with only one other remaining unread in my shelves: Andrei Almalrik's Involuntary Journey To Siberia (1970). These books sit next time one particular gem in my collection: Fodor's Soviet Union 1978. With this handy reference book, I'm occasionally lucky to follow along a trip taken by an author via passing names of hotels, restaurants, monuments, etc. It's a quirky little hobby on mine.

Thubron traveled extensively by car throughout western Russia meeting folk along the way, providing a unique and fun account of his travels. Pond traveled by rail across the entire breadth of Russia plying her hand at a multitude of history and fact, giving a rather dry air of narrative but extensive and thought invoking. Van der Post's narrartive throughout his travelogue was tainted by two things: (1) a fixation on poetry, literature, quotes from both, writers/authors/poets of the Soviet Union and meeting the said writers/authors/poets; and (2) the author acting the part of the superior-minded English colonial deeming everything, other than classical music, as primitive.

Like many readers of Soviet travelogues (are there any others out there aside from myself?), Laurens' impetus to explore Soviet Russia was impelled by its mystery: "I had to go to Russia, to experience the power of the State and the Establishment, the immense primitive insistence on `likemindedness' and `togetherness' as the greatest of all values" (315). When comparing the "Western" formality of individual fallen soldier's graves with that of mass graves for Soviet soldiers, Laurens says, "I also feel that until Russia develops this `belonging through separateness' among its own people, it will continue to be as backward in spirit as it once was in knowledge and technology" (316).

As above, when Lauren infers that a larger sense of community equates with primitiveness (or communism as a state of mind [132]), in Laurens' most popular travelogue The Lost World of the Kalahari (1958), the author uses the word "primitive" eleven times to describe the people, their dancing and their singing. He doesn't defend his use of the derogatory word, but he goes on to relish the primal nature of the Africans and suggests the following:

"With our twentieth-century selves we have forgotten the importance of being truly and openly primitive. We have forgotten the art of our legitimate beginnings. We no longer know how to close the gap between the far past and the immediate present in ourselves. We need primitive nature, the First Man in ourselves, it seems, as the lungs need air and the body food and water." (The Lost World of the Kalahari, 146)

He's quick to label every facet of their lives as primal, primitive or simple, yet glorifies their simple ways on par with the literary clich of the "noble savage". I lost count of the number of times "primitive" was used in Journey into Russia, but as soon as it was becoming overused, the author, in fact, digressed and tried to defend its usage:

"Anyone who knows from my writings what I feel about primitive people will know that I do not use the epithet to disparage. I have always believed that the balance between primitive and civilized values has never been fairly struck in any society ... The Russians, for me, tend to be ... primitive people ... I began to understand why, on my long journey through Russia, parallels with my own native life in Africa had so often occurred to me ... I know a dozen or so tribes in Africa who without the technological dress of Soviet Russia, practise in essence a Soviet system, because it is their natural, primitive way." (284)

And yet, despite the Russian melancholy and suspicion and noted government-level hatred of America, the common people actually "admired America more than any other country in the world and at the same time, envied, disliked and feared it" (136). They, villagers and officers alike, were generally receptive to Laurens' foreignness and took his ignorance in stride; they seemed knowledgeable (a little too knowledgeable, perhaps) of popular Western literature spanning the last century, as if Laurens' own pet topic seemed to effervesce from the people around him. I doubt this was actually the case. Laurens' often sends his writing on page-long tangents toward artistic merits such as art (312) and poetry (313).

These are the idiosyncratic tangents which bog down this travelogue. I think there are more dalliances into his personal history and into the arts than his actual experience in Russia. These dalliances also include his internment in a Japanese war camp, musings about Greek mythology and architecture, and the primitive tribesmen of the Kalahari. Rare are the insights into the Russian soul; I can remember one notable example, however: "They are not a smiling people. With them the smile is generally only a preliminary to laughter and this perhaps more than anything gives them their reputation for melancholy" (23).

Considering this book was written nearly 40 years ago I found that the authors incisive comments about Russian character to be right on the nose. Accurate and quite telling. Actually surprising me that nothing really has changed since then in many ways. An enthralling book and well written as you might expect.

The only crew member still on board is a young cabin boy and he is in the throes of death, following a mysterious attack. The great consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, is called to investigate the matter but the case fails to grip his imagination. Instead, he is more interested in the disappearance of a famous archaeologist. A violent confrontation on the waterfront brings this story to a shocking conclusion.

From Publishers Weekly
Gilbert, the author of two collections of short Holmes pastiches (The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes and The Chronicles of Sherlock Holmes), delivers an atmospheric and suspenseful novel-length rendering of one of the most famous of Dr. Watson's notoriously tantalizing untold tales. In 1898, Scotland Yard asks Holmes to help explain why an unmoored tea cutter, the Matilda Briggs, was found abandoned near a London dock, with only a dying cabin boy on board. The detective also agrees to assist a new client, Daniel Collier, in interpreting a series of letters his explorer and theologian father sent him from the Far East. As in Doyle's own longer stories, Gilbert relates much of the action in flashbacks, and if the revelation of what the rat is fails to fully satisfy, his ability to conjure up the familiar Baker Street scene will make future such efforts welcome. A very engaging Sherlock Holmes adventure!
By Bella B.
A dear friend of mine sent me a signed copy of this book as a birthday present, since she knows my fondness for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. In this story, the author narrates one of the "untold tales"--Holmes mentions the ship "Matilda Briggs" and the giant rat of Sumatra in one of Conan Doyle's stories, with an offhanded remark that the world is not yet prepared for this tale. Mr Gilbert takes that title and spins it into an engaging and well-written adventure with many surprise twists, and an especially major one at the end. This book is certainly a worthy addition to the library of any Sherlock Holmes fan. The author narrates two seemingly unconnected stories--the Matilda Briggs one and the Giant Rat of Sumatra one--and ties them together at the end, culminating with a most unexpected turn of events. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, reading eagerly to see what happens next!
Overall, I enjoyed this book a great deal and look forward to reading Mr Gilbert's next book when it gets published.

A double mystery combined nicely into one story.
By Dr. Fred
I am rather surprised to be the first to review this book and that it is (or was) listed as being out of stock. I don't want to be a first reviewer who gives away the plot as too many do serving as the first reviewer of a thriller. It is enough to say it starts with the appearance of two mysteries. First a ship that arrives with a missing crew and a dead body. Second a young man concerned about his missing father who is somewhere in Sumatra. We go from the ship mystery in progress to a series of long letters from the father to his son. It will read like a novel within a novel and the reader needs to be patient. It will all come together in the fine style that only Sherlock Holmes could manage. I urge other reviewers NOT to reveal or even hint at the surprise ending. Not the best Holmes novel that I have read, but very good. I gave it five stars for the meticulous work the author put into it.

A crisp version of "The giant rat of Sumatra"
By Philip K. Jones
This is the third Sherlockian book by Paul Gilbert and he seems to have hit his stride with this novel. His earlier collections of shorter stories showed `growing pains' as he worked with his writing techniques. In this novel his prose is balanced and well edited and his characters are firmly developed and consistent.

The story begins with the arrival of the "Matilda Briggs," a steam-powered, tea packet from India, which appeared one morning at an unassigned dock in London. It is two days late and missing all its crewmembers other than a dying `cabin boy.' Holmes is called to investigate by the Insurers and by Inspector Lestrade. His findings are cryptic at best and require examining both the ship and the cadaver of the `cabin boy.' To complete the preliminary investigation, Holmes and Watson interview the manager of the shipping line that owns the ship.

As Holmes and Watson return to Baker Street, they find that a new client is awaiting them in their rooms, being fed tea by Mrs. Hudson. He has letters from his famous explorer father and wants Holmes to verify the contents and to find his father. This task turns into a marathon of reading and discussing the letters and the father's adventures, which have taken him to the Dutch East Indies.

The two cases progress slowly, tangling into one another. The `cabin boy' is discovered to have been killed in a most peculiar fashion. The logs and manifests of the ship are missing and the explorer's path seems to be taking him to the same ports as the "Matilda Briggs" left. The journey appears to be as much philosophical as physical and its narration from the letters seems to weigh heavily on the son.

The nature of the Giant Rat and the purpose of the "Matilda Briggs" are eventually uncovered, much to the surprise of all concerned. In the process, Holmes explores the techniques for meditation he learned during his `hiatus' and Lestrade is given a glimpse of the larger world that surrounds Metropolitan London.

This is a well-written, complex novel. It certainly hangs together and provides glimpses of some extraordinary lives and events. Holmes appears to be `softening' somewhat as he grows older. His temper fits and biting sarcasm are appearing less frequently and he seems to be growing a true awareness of other people, but only just a bit of one.

Love Letters to the Dead, by Ava Dellaira

It begins as an assignment for English class: write a letter to a dead person.

Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to the dead—to people like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Winehouse—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating the choppy waters of new friendships, learning to live with her splintering family, falling in love for the first time, and, most important, trying to grieve for May. But how do you mourn for someone you haven’t forgiven?

It’s not until Laurel has written the truth about what happened to herself that she can finally accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she truly start to discover her own path.

In a voice that’s as lyrical and as true as a favorite song, Ava Dellaira writes about one girl’s journey through life’s challenges with a haunting and often heartbreaking beauty.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Debut author Dellaira's heart-wrenching epistolary novel begins with Laurel's freshman assignment to write a letter to a dead person. She starts with a missive to Kurt Cobain, who had been a favorite of her recently deceased older sister, May. Gradually, through the teen's letters to other dead celebrities (Janis Joplin, Amelia Earhart, River Phoenix, and more), readers will begin to piece together the history of her splintered family life, including her parents' divorce and mother's virtual abandonment following May's unexplained death. Laurel is devastatingly, emotionally fragile, but she makes friends at her new high school and even starts to develop a serious love interest. Her misconstrued hero-worship of May gradually evolves into a deeper understanding of her beloved sister's strengths and many imperfections. Beautifully written, although a bit choppy in sections, particularly regarding the dead addressees' lives, this powerful novel deftly illustrates the concept that writing is an especially valuable form of healing for those dealing with overwhelming pain and grief. Best for teens who enjoyed Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower (MTV, 1999).—Susan Riley, Mamaroneck Public Library, NY

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The assignment: write a letter to someone who is dead. Laurel falls into this classroom task deeper than she could have ever imagined, writing to deceased stars like Kurt Cobain, Amelia Earhart, Judy Garland, River Phoenix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, and others whose lives ended as abruptly as Laurel’s older sister’s did. Her methodology expands beyond simply writing to the dead. Rather, she researches each recipient, learning about their lives in order to make each letter relatable to the intended party. These quite savvy letters become Laurel’s way of working through her emotions as she begins high school, makes new friends, deals with a crumbling family, falls in love, and continues to grieve for the loss of her sister. With the help of her fantasy correspondence, she is able to find common ground, express herself, and eventually discover the messages and lessons of the deceased addressee’s lives—as well as her own. Well paced and cleverly plotted, this debut uses a fresh, new voice to tell a sometimes sad, sometimes edgy, but always compelling narrative. Fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han, get ready. Grades 7-10. --Jeanne Fredriksen

“With beautiful observations of where life can take us, from grieving to celebrating, disappointment to wonder, LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD is a love letter to living.” ―Jay Asher, author of 13 Reasons Why

“Dear Ava Dellaira: Your book broke my heart, and pieced it back together. As with Kurt, Janis, Amelia and the others who are gone but still somehow here, LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD leaves an indelible mark.” ―Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay

“As wondrous--and as fearless--as a shooting star.” ―Lauren Myracle, author, The Winnie Years

“Riveting, captivating, utterly disarming. I could not put this book down! LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD is like discovering a shoebox full of notes addressed to someone else. I read fast, afraid I'd be caught peeking at something I wasn't ever supposed to see. A voyeuristic delight!” ―Siobhan Vivian, author of The List

“Effective and satisfyingly heartbreaking.” ―Kirkus Reviews

It is equal parts lovely and heartbreaking.
By Addison @ Of Spectacles and Books
Why I chose this book: One of my favorite types of books to read is epistolary novels. I am a girl that is all about letters, especially love letters. So when this book began to pop up on several book blogging radars, I knew I had to pick it up. Oddly enough, I wrote my own grandfather’s eulogy while reading this book, so I related with the book on a whole other level.

3 Things You Need to Know:

1. Epistolary Novel. This is a story told in letters. While I hear many a complaint about this, I really enjoyed this format and felt that it did the story justice. Sometimes you can’t sort out feelings and emotions until you tell them to another person. The character of Laurel understands this as she writes letters to dead icons throughout history. Sometimes their stories give Laurel insight, and sometimes they are simply there to listen. Either way, Laurel discovers insights about her feelings, and about life around her. After all, high school is never easy.

2. All aboard the FEELS train! I had an idea about how this book would end, but I did not expect the pain and emotion that would come with it. Ugh. Dellaira definitely knows how to make you feel ALL THE THINGS. I found myself wanting to hold Laurel and protect her from life’s cruelties; something that I often feel when looking back at my own teen years.

3. A place for the lovers of music, poetry, and culture. Dellaira writes so beautifully as she intertwines snippets of reality into Laurel’s world. While still giving vivid and beautiful descriptions about life, love, and everything in-between, she carefully sculpts the voice of a questioning teen. Laurel’s voice is authentic as it is original. While still maintaining the form of a vulnerable and broken girl, you see all the potential that Laurel has. It is equal parts lovely and heartbreaking.

Final Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book. While it may have been due to where I was in my life, I still believe that this is a beautifully written novel. Love letters are totally capable of telling a story, and Ava Dellaira proves this over and over again. I gave this book four stars on Goodreads.

A Book to Define A Generation
By Victoria Jessup
This book changed my life. I always looked at death as something that always happened to everyone else. Laurel throughout the events of the novel hit home as it should with any other teenage reader whose dealt with the aspects and sucky nature of being a teen. It's absolute perfection. The whole rage of the teenage rebellion shook whole within the walls of her world. She lost someone close to her and dealt with the severity of the situation under the covers, and to release all that pent up emotion she looked for a way out. It's realistic. The bond between sisters is greater than anyone realizes. It's a bit of a trigger for some readers. However, it is still an excellent read. This is the type of book that defines a generation. Highly Recommend.

Haunting and Heartbreaking.
By Susannah St Clair Foxy Loxy
This is a marvelous and enlightening book. Full of intelligent insights in to what very much feels like a 14 year old girls mind. All her fears, her insecurities, her desires and the loss of feeling cared for by someone other than herself. Laurel has lost her older sister May in an odd accident that she blames herself for. Her parents have been divorced and now after May’s death, her mother leaves the family completely and moves across the country to “get herself together” leaving her daughter and ex- husband trying to survive the horror of losing not one but two of the family’s heart supports.
Following Laurel’s step up into high school and all the emotional upheavals that happen to a child’s psyche when tossed into the firestorm of adolescence , the author writes with a deep understanding and love for what a young person goes through in the first blossoming of youth. The pain, the agony of not belonging along with the unfinished mourning of her best friend, her sister May.
I was not sure at all in the beginning if I would like the form of the book. The letter form. It turns out that it works brilliantly, especially when the “people” Laura writes to are people who have lost their way and die young often with overdoses and suicide, showing the same loss of self that Laura is fighting. It takes the journey through her freshman year to finally begin to come to terms with the fact that her sister was not the perfect, happy go lucky sister she tried to portray but an extremely frightened young woman who was trying to do the job that the parents should have been doing: protecting her and Laurel and her pain when she finds out that she has allowed things to happen to Laurel that no child should endure. Not having a Mom to intercede in May’s life and save her from the moral dilemma she faces and falls prey to and in the long run dies because of.
Beautifully written with strong characters and an obvious understanding of the human condition, “Love Letters” is a deft look into our society’s youth. I think it is a book that all teachers and parents should read. It is one of those that will be forever in my library except when loaned out to help a parent though a tricky patch.

The Baller: A Down and Dirty Football Novel, by Vi Keeland

Three consecutive weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and #1 on Amazon.
From New York Times & USA Today Bestseller, Vi Keeland, comes a sexy new standalone novel.

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men's locker room. It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.
The famed quarterback decided to bare all.
And by all, I don't mean he told me any of his secrets.
No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.
The Super Bowl MVP quickly adopted a new hobby--screwing with me.
When I pushed back, he shifted from wanting to screw with me, to wanting to screw me.
But I don't date players.
And it's not because I'm one of the few women working in the world of professional football.
I'd date an athlete.
It's the other kind of player I don't date.
You know the type. Good looking, strong, cocky, always looking to get laid.

Brody Easton was the ultimate player.
Every woman wanted to be the one to change him.
But the truth was, all he needed was a girl worth changing for.
Turned out, I was that girl.
Simple right?
Let's face it. It never is.
There's a story between once upon a time and happily ever after...
And this one is ours.

Author's note - The Baller is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

The dirty talker can sweet talk too.
By Stacey is Sassy (Stacey B-Reviews)
I've decided after reading The Baller that Brody should be our first cloning candidate. I really, really like him. The Brody is a smart bloke and knows how to get people on his side. A smile and a compliment to the ladies, a pat on the back and man talk for the lads. The Brody doesn't talk down to kids and is respectful to the older generation. There's a slight malfunction that might need to get tweaked in the cloning process though. The Brody turns into an arrogant jerk when a possible mating candidate comes into touching distance. His second brain also causes strife when said mating candidate is close. The Brody's second brain wants to escape from its cover and rise into attack position...in case mating candidate needs him urgently. The Brody's first brain also goes into a default setting of testing tolerance, by making the mating candidate put up with sexist drivel. Luckily, once mating candidate has been matched and successfully caught in The Brody's clutches, he reverts back to perfect, or near to perfect Brody.

Delilah has a tough job. She works in an industry where it's a bit of a men's club and she's one of very few women who steps in to the club and dares to do the job as well, if not better. She isn't a stranger to the game. Her father was a star football player when she was growing up and because she takes her job seriously, goes out of her way to know as many statistics as possible about football and the players. As a sports reporter, one part of her job is to walk into the locker room after a game for an interview. Some of the players are respectful, while others go out of their way to make her uncomfortable. One of those players that do an excellent job of making her uncomfortable is the quarterback, Brody Easton.

Brody has spent the last few years concentrating on his career. Football is a very important part of his life, but for awhile there, real life and issues intruded that nearly took it all away. After having a few seasons on the sidelines, he knows where his head needs to be. Women have a place in his bed, but relationships are not high on his list of priorities. His priorities change when a curly haired, beautiful woman tells him straight that she doesn't do hook ups. What's a bloke to do? Try and have a relationship of course.

Brody is fond of walls. Especially if there's a woman between him and the wall. Especially, especially when that woman has her legs around his waist. Brody is a DIRTY TALKER. He does it extremely well. I was feeling extremely hot and bothered before the action even started...and the action definitely lived up to the words.

Brody is also a sweetheart. He's been going to a nursing home to visit a woman every Tuesday for years. Marlene, was there for him throughout his life and now she has dementia. His dedication to her is only one of the many things that demonstrate how sweet he is.

This review is mostly a dedication to Brody. I can't help myself, he was a bloody good character. He wasn't perfect, but he tried his hardest to be a good man and find goodness in other people. Delilah was also pretty cool. She has faced her own challenges and heartbreak, but by then end is stronger and confident in herself and the relationship between herself and Brody.

There are interesting additional characters and some of them I loved. I would love to see Indie get her own story and maybe even Michael too...but not together. There were a few people we meet that didn't really have their stories finished and I kind of wanted to know what happened to them in the end. Maybe a story for them too. I'm thinking that I may be a new member of the fans of Vi club too. This will definitely not be my last story by this author.

Loved Brody and Delilah
By Pet
When I started this book, I thought it was going to go in a completely different direction. Oh, and I thought Brody was a jerk. He was a charming jerk, but still... And I felt Delilah was going to be one of those tough as nails, ball busting women that I really didn’t identify with. I was wrong on both counts.

You just can’t help loving Brody. He’s funny, he never takes himself too seriously and he has a huge heart. There are reasons he doesn’t have any interest in building a relationship and I honestly couldn’t blame him. Sometimes you just have to cut ties to survive the hurt and move on. I just wish he could have left his past where it was and not jeopardized what he had with Delilah.

Delilah doesn’t trust easily either. She works her butt off, she’s cool under pressure and she sure isn’t going to let Brody’s juvenile antics throw her career off track. But, she couldn’t resist his offbeat brand of humor any more than I could. There is just something about him that makes you smile, even when everything that comes out of his mouth walks the edge of offensive. I was laughing at him even when I knew I probably shouldn’t be.

Willow… Willow is a catalyst and I never really felt the compassion for her that I think I was supposed to. I’m not sure if that was how she was written or if I’m just uncaring…it may be the latter. I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Just like all the other Keeland books I’ve read, I was pulled right into the story and I love how she always throws in a curve when you least expect it. This is a great stand alone with incredibly likeable characters. My only wish is that we get more of Indie’s story. That woman is a force of nature and I need more of her humor in my life.

This Book is So Much More Than I Originally Thought!
By Kristin B.
When I first saw The Baller in the bestselling Kindle books, I thought, meh, just another novel about a cocky football player and tons of sex. This book is, in fact, that but it's so much more than I ever expected! I'm a huge fan of sports romances, particularly ones about football players, so this one was right up my alley. I finally gave into temptation and I'm so glad I did because I LOVED it! I had never read a book by Vi Keeland before but now I am extremely curious to see what else she has written.

"If I could do anything I wanted on a day off, I'd do...you."

Delilah Maddox is a football sportscaster at World Media Broadcasting in New York. In a male-dominated profession, Delilah has to deal with people not thinking she is up for interviewing male athletes but she grew up with an NFL father and knows her stuff. Plus, she has a wicked sense of sarcasm and doesn't let anyone get to her. The first time she interviews Brody Easton, the wildly popular quarterback for the New York Steel, she is in the locker room and gets a rather...shall we say, interesting interview with him. Brody is known to be a player but is immediately taken with her and is persistent until she caves. They start off as friends but you really know that they will end up being more than friends.

"I'm like fungus, I grow on you."
"Charming."

This book is full of sarcasm, wit, fantastic and hilarious banter, and I laughed more times than I can count! The first half of the book is very fast-paced but the second half slows down a bit while the characters deal with their own problems. Delilah has a past that prevents her from moving forward and she's scared to love someone after what happened a number of years ago. Brody's blast from the past re-enters his life during a tumultuous time and he needs to decide how he feels before he loses the one person who makes him want to change and live happily ever after.

"When life knocks you down, stop and look around for one thing that's good, because there is always something. Then cling to that good."

The Baller really was much better than I anticipated and I am really glad I took a chance on it. I loved the chemistry and ping-pong style dialogue between Delilah and Brody and could really feel it through the pages of the book! A word of caution, if you aren't a fan of profanity and sexual content, I would suggest skipping this one but if it doesn't bother you, then by all means, buy this book! If you enjoy the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy and the Game On series by Kristen Callihan, I think you will like this book too. I highly recommend this book!
