Badly written

This book is very poorly written. There were so many grammatical errors that it made the material hard to understand even. The typos were also out of control. The material had great potential, but it was all over the place and very repetitive with no real substance. I had to put this book down for a while just so I could get a break from the mess ups. Good luck.

Dragon King

Anyone who has been keeping up with Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings knows how Con feels about his Dragon’s finding human mates. He would do anything to keep it from happening. As it is he tries very hard to prevent them and he continually fails in this endeavor. Now imagine his reaction to a freshly woken Dragon finding his true forever love as soon as he wakes from his Dragon Sleep. Arian is so newly awoken that he has not ventured from his cave or found clothing to cover his very sexily naked body. That’s exactly what happens with Arian and Grace (insert maniacal chuckle) and Con is King Pissy over it.

Grace is in a bind. Her publisher is pressuring her to turn in her next book in a few weeks. It’s already way past due. She has ran off to Scotland to find her missing muse. All Grace wants to do is find the perfect quiet spot to write her book, muse permitting. As luck would have it she finds that spot but soon discovers that a cranky man who doesn’t want her anywhere near his cave is already there.

Having slept for the past six hundred years Arian is behind on some things but thanks to Constantine keeping him up on most current events he knows that the Dragon Kings are once again at war. Arian also knows not to trust anyone because enemies are at every turn. Now Arian is left to discover if the beauty with the laptop is a spy sent by their enemies or if she truly is as she says, just looking for a peaceful place.

This installment of the Dark King series could easily work as a stand-alone. There are not any advancements made in the events that have been occurring in the full length novels. There were not any major revelations made that concern the conflicts that the Dragon Kings have been facing.

I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became ...

Dragon King is story number 6.5 in author Donna Grant’s Dark Kings series and novella number 12 in the 2015 1,001 Dark Nights Series. I’m a huge Donna Grant fan and an equally huge 1,001 Dark Nights fan. Add them together and what do you get? Magic, I tell you. I adored this story and want a dragon of my own!
Hibernating Dragon King Arian and romance author Grace and up together in a most unlikely chance meeting. Grace has no idea just what she’s stumbled upon and Arian is transfixed by Grace’s personality and beauty. Both equally wary and curious of one another, they form a bond and attraction that I can only describe as delicious.
I loved Arian and the story of how this mountain became his bed of sorts. I loved how curious he was about Grace and how enamored and taken he was with her and her quirky nature. I also loved how kind and caring he was with her. He melted my heart with his tenderness and caring (even though he played a bit on her weakness to get her to stay with him…I know, I know, but I can totally forgive him for that!). I also loved Grace. She is real and relatable with a great personality and a tenacious attitude when it came to her writing. She also broke m heart when we learned of her past love life.
Ms. Grant wrote one of my favorite paragraphs in any book, and it came when Grace and Arian became intimate. She wrote that Grace had been writing passion wrong…because it had been so long since she had experienced true passion and she forgot what it actually felt like. That one paragraph had me hoping like a feind these two would somehow make things work.
Of course that would involve the little obstacle of Arian being a dragon. Luckily, Grace being as amazing as she is, it wouldn’t be the biggest problem they had to overcome. Now, I won’t give anything away but I will tell you that Ms. Grant totally nailed the ending and it was movie worthy!
Even if you’ve never even thought of picking up a book with dragons in it, I urge you to give this series a try. It is one of the best paranormals out there and Ms. Grant continues to be an auto-buy author for me! Thank you Ms. Grant and thank you 1,001 Dark Nights for a fantastic read!

What a thrilling fantasy!

Take flight in this dragon’s tale with some action, danger and steamy nights! What a thrilling fantasy!

This if the first 1001 Dark Nights book I have read and the first of the Dark Kings Series as well. So that means I will not be comparing it to the rest. The beginning was a bit slow, but it heats up fast. I found it to be exciting and fun to read. Oh to find a cave like that with more in it than you could ever imagine, a secret worth discovering. Donna Grant brings this story to life and paints such a vivid tale that it is easy to lose track of time while being totally engrossed in the lives of Grace and Arian. Grace is unlike any character I have seen. She seems to have no problem sharing her private thoughts evens when it embarrasses her. I am used to characters holding back some, but not her. It is refreshing. Just wait till they crank up the heat. It will have you wanting more. I have so got to read more of this series.

Grace goes to Scotland trying to overcome her writers block. She gets trapped out in the middle of nowhere during a terrible storm. Arian is a Dragon King who just woke from his 600 year nap and wants to know what this woman is doing on his mountain, followed by his enemy. Stuck in the middle of a war, will Grace be able to prove her innocents or will she die trying?

About the Author
Gerard J. Tortora is a professor of biology and teaches microbiology, human anatomy, and physiology at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He received his M.A. in Biology from Montclair State College in 1965. He belongs to numerous biology/microbiology organizations, such as the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Education Association (NEA), New Jersey Educational Association (NJEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB). Jerry is the author of a number of biological science textbooks. In 1995, he was selected as one of the finest faculty scholars at Bergen Community College and was named Distinguished Faculty Scholar. In 1996, Jerry received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Texas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education.

Berdell R. Funke received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in microbiology from Kansas State University. He has spent his professional years as a professor of microbiology at North Dakota State University. As a research scientist in the Experiment Station at North Dakota State, he has published numerous papers on soil microbiology and food microbiology.

Good but needs supplemental material

Easy read and one of my favorite textbooks but I needed extra help for exams so I got the test bank for this textbook. Little did i know at the time that professors use the test banks for exam questions (my final came directly from it). If you need it to study, let me know and I'll send it to you =)

A lot of information....disorganized

I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

I miss it

This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

Of the Nature of Things - De Rerum Natura - Titus Lucretius Carus A metrical translation by William Ellery Leonard De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things) is a first-century BC didactic poem by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC) with the goal of explaining Epicurean philosophy to a Roman audience. The poem, written in some 7,400 dactylic hexameters, is divided into six untitled books, and explores Epicurean physics through richly poetic language and metaphors. Lucretius presents the principles of atomism; the nature of the mind and soul; explanations of sensation and thought; the development of the world and its phenomena; and explains a variety of celestial and terrestrial phenomena. The universe described in the poem operates according to these physical principles, guided by fortuna, "chance," and not the divine intervention of the traditional Roman deities. Epicurus maintained that the unhappiness and degradation of humans arose largely from the dread which they entertained of the power of the deities, from terror of their wrath, which was supposed to be displayed by the misfortunes inflicted in this life, by the everlasting tortures that were the lot of the guilty in a future state, or where these feelings were not strongly developed, from a vague dread of gloom and misery after death. To remove these fears, and thus to establish tranquillity in the heart, was the purpose of his teaching. Thus the deities, whose existence he did not deny, lived forevermore in the enjoyment of absolute peace, strangers to all the passions, desires, and fears, which agitate the human heart, totally indifferent to the world and its inhabitants, unmoved alike by their virtues and their crimes. To prove this position he called upon the atomism of Democritus, by which he sought to demonstrate that the material universe was formed not by a Supreme Being, but by the mixing of elemental particles that had existed from all eternity governed by certain simple laws. The task undertaken by Lucretius was to clearly state and fully develop these views in an attractive form; his work being an attempt to show that everything in nature can be explained by natural laws without the need for the intervention of divine beings.

About the Author
Titus Lucretius Carus (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC) was a Roman poet and philosopher. His only known work is the epic philosophical poem De rerum natura about the tenets and philosophy of Epicureanism, and which is usually translated into English as On the Nature of Things. Very little is known about Lucretius's life; the only certain fact is that he was either a friend or client of Gaius Memmius, to whom the poem was addressed and dedicated. The De rerum natura was a considerable influence on the Augustan poets, particularly Virgil (in his Aeneid and Georgics, and to a lesser extent on the Satires and Eclogues) of Horace. The work virtually disappeared during the Middle Ages, but was rediscovered in a monastery in Germany during 1417, by Poggio Bracciolini, and it played an important role both in the development of atomism (Lucretius was an important influence on Pierre Gassendi) and the efforts of various figures of the Enlightenment era to construct a new Christian humanism. The book The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (2011) by Stephen Greenblatt is a narrative of the discovery of the old Lucretius manuscript by Poggio.

We were looking for this book at first for the front cover, which is rare and and his painter is one my husband's favorite artist, then, after we read the book we enjoyed the book more than ever. Poetic philosophy

How incredible it is to read a poet and philosopher from 60 B.C. writing on the philosophical derivation of the idea that atoms must exist, that they have some spin on them, and that there is conservation of matter in nature! These thoughts about "atomism" would have been lost except for the fact that Lucretius presented them in a very good Latin poem. Although credit is given to Leucippus and Democritus for starting the idea of atomism, Epicurius and Lucretius were strong exponents of these ideas. The poem utilizes common observations to illustrate that the world about us is simply a combination of atoms and void. This had strong implications not only for the demise of the Roman and Greek gods and goddesses but also for how humans should live in the real world, and how they largely create their own misery. Lucretius loves life, looks straightly at it, speaks strongly against the fear of death, and promotes a rational calm life in which friendship is very important. The poetry is wonderful and powerful in itself. Two quotes (I,62 and I, 140) in the early part of the poem speak clearly to the modern reader: "When before our eyes man's life lay groveling, prostrate, crushed to dust under the burden of Religion (which thrust its head from heaven, its horrible face glowering over mankind born to die) one man, a Greek, was the first mortal who dared oppose his eyes, the first to stand firm in defiance. Not the fables of the gods, nor lightning, nor the menacing rumble of heaven could daunt him, but all the more they whetted his keen mind with longing to be first to smash open the tight-barred gates of Nature"..."And yet your virtue and the hoped-for pleasure of a delightful friendship urge me to persevere in my work, to watch through the calm nights, seeking choice words, the song by which at last I can open to your mind such dazzling light that you may see deep into hidden things." This is a great and astonishing poem, powerfully translated by Anthony Esolen. Lucretius did not conceive of the idea that parts of atoms, i.e. electrons, might spread rapidly through the body, so his poem gets more labored in Book III where he deals with the relationship between the body, mind, soul, and spirit. However he did think the soul had to be made up of the very smallest atoms that could pass quickly to all parts of the body. If the modern reader substitutes "electrons" where he mentions "atoms" in reference to the soul, then Lucretius is not far off the mark. The book has a 21 page introduction and 49 pages of notes at the end to help the reader understand the place of this poem in the history of ideas. It should be required reading for biological scientists and physicians.

It would be nice if they at least included a website that has ...

I just passed the exam with a score of 834 and have already passed the 70-697 exam. There is some overlap in the material in the 2 exams ( I used William Paneck's book for the 697).

The material is OK, but it doesn't go into much depth, there are a lot of links to MS web pages for more detailed info. It would be nice if they at least included a website that has all of the links in a clickable format. The URLs are usually long and a pain to type accurately.

Also - no practice questions included! Paneck's 697 book included an assessment test, practice questions after each chapter, and 100 practice questions on a website for about the same price as this book. I also thought Paneck's book prepared me better for the test, although you won't pass the test just by reading either book.

I don't know if I've just been spoiled by other books while studying for various certs, but this book has a lot left to be desired. No practice tests. No glossary. Nothing specifying what's really important for the exam. A lot of "Here's a link go study it." The influence of transformative concepts such as ‘risk management’, ‘the therapeutic prison’, and ‘preventative detention’ are explored as aspects of penal culture. About the Author
Professor Chris Cunneen is a conjoint professor of criminology in the Faculty of Law of the University of New South Wales. He held the NewSouth Global Chair in Criminology at UNSW from 2006 to 2010. Until 2005, Professor Cunneen was the Director for the Institute of Criminology at the University of Sydney, a position held since 1995. He has been teaching Criminology at the University of Sydney Law School since 1990. Previously he held research positions with the Indigenous Law Centre at UNSW and the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. Professor Cunneen is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology (since 2010), Australian Indigenous Law Reporter (since 1997), Current Issues in Criminal Justice (since 1991) and Youth Justice (since 2005). He is also a Series Editor of the Institute of Criminology Monograph Series. He was the Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Council which advised the Minister on juvenile justice matters from 2002-2008. He was a member of the Attorney-Generals Taskforce on Child Sexual Assault in Aboriginal Communities. Professor Cunneen has published widely in the area of juvenile justice, policing, restorative justice and Indigenous issues including reports for the Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner and a number of books on issues such as juvenile justice; Indigenous legal issues; hate crime, and policing. He has also contributed articles to many journals. Professor Eileen Baldry's main areas of research and publishing are in: the criminal justice system focusing on critical criminology-critical disability studies development, vulnerable persons and minority groups - people with mental health disorders and cognitive disability, women and Indigenous persons; throughcare, transition from prison, post-release and homelessness; and criminal justice-human service system interactions; and in Indigenous social work; and community and social development in social housing. Professor Baldry is currently a Chief Investigator on 1 ARC Discovery project, 2 ARC Linkage projects and 1 NHMRC project and leads a number of smaller linked projects in the areas noted. Emeritus Professor David Brown taught Criminal Law, Advanced Criminal Law, Criminal Justice, Crime Prevention, Community Corrections and Penology courses at the University of NSW in Sydney from 1974 to 2008. He is a co-author of the major and innovative Criminal Laws (1990), (2nd edn 1996) and (3rd edn 2001) (4th edn 2006) (5th edn 2011) which has become the leading student teaching text in criminal law in universities in NSW. He is very widely published across the broad areas of criminal law, criminal justice, criminology and penology, both in Australia and internationally. He has co-authored or co-edited 10 books; published 33 chapters in books, and over 100 articles in journals and in conference proceedings published; given 120 conference papers or public addresses all over the world; and is a regular media commentator on criminal justice issues. Dr Mark Brown's primary teaching and research interests lie in the areas of penality, corrections and colonial penal history. He has written extensively on the subject of dangerousness and legislative measures to deal with serious offenders. He has co-edited with John Pratt Dangerous Offenders: Punishment and Social Order (Routledge, 2000) and is a co-editor of The New Punitiveness: Current Trends, Theories, Perspectives (Willan, 2005). His research in penal history concentrates upon British India and is concerned with colonial ideas of native criminality and the interplay between the emerging academic disciplines of criminology and anthropology and the task of colonial governance. Dr Brown has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Delhi Law School and travels regularly to Delhi and London to utilise the India Office Records archives. He teaches the undergraduate subjects Punishment and Social Control and Global Criminology, and a Masters subject The New Punitiveness. Melanie Schwartz has been teaching criminal law in the Faculty of Law, UNSW, since 2006. She also teaches in the Indigenous programs in the Faculty including the pre-law program and the winter school. She co-convenes the criminal justice stream in the Diploma of Humanities. Alex Steel is the Associate Dean (Education) and an Associate Professor in the Law School. He has published widely on theft, fraud and dishonesty law and theory. He is an author of the highly regarded Criminal Laws: Materials and Commentary on the Criminal Law and Procedure of NSW (4th ed). Alex has also produced detailed law reform reports for Government and makes regular submissions to law reform bodies. Alex is a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the NSW Bar Association and an expert advisor to the NSW Law Reform Commission. He was previously a Consultant to the NSW Attorney General's Department, Criminal Law Review Division.

Excellent study and extremely interesting overview re the expansion & continuation of the penal system. Punitive prison systems do not prevent or deter crime and that is why we must as a society consider alternatives to prisons and as soon as possible. Well done to these authors.
