William E. "Bill" DeTurk, PT, PhD, is Clinical Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at Stony Brook University (SUNY) in Stony Brook, New York. He also works as a Consultant to the Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York.

Lawrence P. "Larry" Cahalin, PT, MS, CCS, is an APTA Board Certified Cardiopulmonary Clinical Specialist who was part of the initial 5-member panel of physical therapists who developed the APTA Preferred Practice Patterns in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. He has been actively involved in clinical research and clinical practice in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy for over 20 years and is currently Senior Clinical Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. His current research and clinical interests include the development of hypothesis-oriented algorithms for the examination and treatment of persons with heart and lung disease and better understanding breathing in persons with heart and lung disease.

I spent too much money on this Kindle textbook for class and have not been able to use it at all because the page numbers do not correlate to the actual book that my professor refers to on her powerpoints and assignments. Also, the page numbers aren't displayed when the page is shown so I have search through the entire chapter looking through the material. If you want this for your own sake it is fine, but if you need this for school do not buy/download it.

Good for CCS study

I purchased this text to study for the CCS exam to supplement my text I had from PT school (Frownfelter & Dean). A couple reviews have indicated this text is long-winded, which it is - but I appreciate that as I feel I learn more when everything is so thoroughly explained. Overal, I feel this is a fantastic text to grasp the core concepts of cardiopulmonary PT and has been integral in my studies towards my CCS. Highly recommend.

Infancia es destino

Dicen que pocas personas conservan memorias de sus primeros cinco años de vida, esos días en los que si un padre presta mucha atención, notará los primeros rasgos de la personalidad de un hijo, los cuales, con el tiempo, empezarán quizás a adquirir un sentido premonitorio. Pienso que, de alguna manera, esos primeros recuerdos encierran un secreto fascinante capaz de ayudarnos a descifrar quiénes somos. Yo recurrentemente intento adentrarme ahí, en ese misterioso archivo místico que es la memoria. Tal vez por ello me gusta tanto preguntarle a la gente: “¿Cuál es tu primer recuerdo?” Me intriga y me atrae todo aquello que guardamos con especial cuidado en el fondo de nuestra mente, casi como un tesoro sagrado.

En mi caso, mi primer recuerdo es la pequeña alegría infantil que sentía en el alma apenas a los cuatro años, cuando veía un vestido de Blancanieves. Estaba fascinada con el mundo de las princesas de Disney, ese universo de magia, ilusiones y fantasía donde precisamente ella, Blancanieves, era mi heroína absoluta.

Si bien Walt Disney sabía mucho de sueños, el experto en cumplírmelos era mi papá. De joven fue jugador profesional de futbol, y después, cuando se casó con mi mamá, se convirtió en entrenador de varios equipos, las Chivas uno de ellos. Gracias a su trabajo y a que es un hombre ahorrador, pudimos hacer un viaje los tres a Disney sin mis hermanos (Alina estaba recién nacida y se quedó con mis abuelos maternos, Mamayoya y Pilil; Jesús no había llegado al mundo, ni siquiera entraba todavía en los planes de mis padres). Para mí, ese paseo fue como estar en una película llena de encanto y príncipes, donde todo era posible y yo podía ser cualquier princesa que eligiera: Blancanieves, por supuesto. Contemplar con mis propios ojos y tocar cada rincón de aquella aldea fantástica, con sus casitas y pasajes coloridos, comprobar que el sueño en verdad existía fue maravilloso. Jamás lo olvidaré.

Levantaba la mirada y veía a la Bella Durmiente o a Cenicienta doblando la esquina, y de noche, el desfile: tantos cuentos de hadas convertidos en una realidad resplandeciente, el parque iluminado por árboles con estrellas diminutas y los pensamientos de tanta gente envueltos en luces y fuegos pirotécnicos. Aquél era el mejor lugar del universo. Y ahí, justo en la tierra de las princesas y los príncipes azules de a de veras, mi papá me compró el anhelado disfraz de Blancanieves.

Claro que para mí no era un disfraz, sino el traje verdadero, el único, confeccionado especialmente para mí. Lo curioso es que, a pesar de que se tratara de un simple disfraz, a mi papá le costó como si fuera el vestido auténtico, pedrería preciosa incluida.

Cualquiera diría que por eso tuvimos que comer hot dogs y nuggets el resto del viaje.

Amaba tanto el famoso traje que todavía lo lucí con orgullo, aunque ya un poco pequeño y percudido, en mi quinto cumpleaños en el salón de fiestas Polichinela, en Guadalajara, mi tierra. Fue la primera vez que me sentí realizada, la primera vez que me convertí en reina del mundo. La única, ja.

Fui una niña bastante feliz, en mi casa me divertía como cualquiera de mi edad. Mi hermana y yo jugábamos a hacer casas de campaña con sábanas y, cuando estaban mis primos, jugábamos al cine. Yo ponía una taquilla y les vendía boletos y palomitas, luego apagábamos las luces y nos sentábamos a ver La Cenicienta, La dama y el vagabundo o, claro, Blancanieves. También me gustaba salir a dar la vuelta en esa preciosa bicicleta rosa que me había traído Santa Claus.

Además de las princesas de Disney, amaba el ballet y, desde entonces, el futbol, del que por obvias razones todo el tiempo se hablaba en casa. También bailaba, jugaba a la cocinita, a la escuela y a disfrazarme todo el santo día de princesa. Aunque tenía una gran colección de muñecas, no me gustaba jugar con ellas, más bien amaba sacarlas de su caja y acomodarlas en una repisa a un lado de mi cama para mirarlas embobada por horas, con sus hermosos vestidos, sus peinados, las diminutas zapatillas y los sombreros. Debo decir que algunas personas me consideran por eso un poco rarita.

Cada vez que salía una nueva Barbie, yo debía tenerla. Eran mi obsesión. Las deseaba todas, desde la más sencilla –que venía guapísima en su caja, con un bikini de colores y un par de faldas de hawaiana o una tabla de surf– hasta las de edición especial de fin de año, con alucinantes vestidos de gala, hechos de satín y tul color rojo cereza, llenos de brillantes y dos pares de tacones. Me interesaba tanto la que venía con disfraz de vaquerita como la rockera, la Barbie disco, la soñadora, la bailarina de ballet, la cumpleañera, la buza, la sirena, la chef, la atleta. Me sentía contenta con sólo mirarlas.

Los domingos, lo que más me gustaba era ponerme desde las siete de la mañana a ver Chabelo para saber qué Barbie y demás juguetes iba a pedir en Navidad o en mi cumpleaños. Conviene señalar que el asunto de los regalos siempre ha sido muy particular en mi familia, porque mi cumpleaños es el 23 de diciembre y mis papás siempre me lo festejaron como Dios manda, a pesar de que al día siguiente fuera Navidad y hubiera más regalos. Así que me tocaban, y a la fecha me tocan, regalos por partida doble –no soy la única, pues el cumpleaños de mi papá es el 24 y así como él lo hacía conmigo, yo le doy doble regalo, uno de cumpleaños en la mañana y otro de Navidad a medianoche–, por lo cual tenía motivos de sobra para hacer mi lista de deseos cuando veía lo que se ganaban los “cuates” que iban a concursar con el amigo de todos los niños.

Después de recetarme el programa desde el principio hasta las mismísimas catafixias, iba al mercado con mi mamá a ver ropa y accesorios para mis muñecas, que permanecían sentadas muy quietecitas en su repisa, esperando un nuevo traje de gala, unas zapatillas de cristal o unos lentes de sol de última moda. Las compras dominicales terminaban con un tejuino y un pozole en compañía de mi mamá. Después, volvíamos a la casa y veíamos en la sala el partido del equipo al que papá estuviera dirigiendo en ese momento y gritábamos como si estuviéramos en el estadio. Si él estaba en casa, entonces el futbol era en su cuarto y a veces, cuando había varios partidos simultáneos importantes para él, se llevaba a la recámera la televisión de la sala y la de la cocina para juntar los tres aparatos y ver todos los juegos al mismo tiempo. Después compró una televisión que permitía sintonizar dos o tres canales a la vez y ¡oh, santo remedio! Esos domingos eran perfectos.

También recuerdo bien el Instituto de la Vera-Cruz, en Guadalajara, una escuela para niñas dirigida por las Mercedarias

Misioneras de Bérriz –mejor conocidas como Las Meches– donde transcurrió mi niñez y parte de mi adolescencia: el enorme patio que no era más que una inmensa plancha de cemento con canchas de básquet y de volibol, los muros y los tres pisos que encerraban esa algarabía tan característica de las escuelas, un alboroto inconfundible que invadía todo el ambiente. Me parecía gigante, lleno de rincones, pasillos y salones donde fácilmente habría podido perderme. Sus paredes aún resguardan la inocencia de esa niña tímida que fui y que todavía conservo dentro de mí, aparentemente bien escondida. Mis primeros descubrimientos y mis sueños más decisivos ocurrieron dentro de aquellas instalaciones a las que tanto cariño les tengo.

En la escuela siempre fui de las alumnas responsables y aplicadas; tal vez ello contribuyó, entre otras cosas, a que en tercero de primaria siguiera sin tener amigas. Pero la verdad es que si no las tenía no era por ser matada, sino porque mis cualidades para la convivencia permanecían dormidas en mi cama mientras yo tenía que ir a la escuela. Dentro del salón, las demás intentaban hablar conmigo para que les prestara los apuntes o les soplara las respuestas a medio examen, pero yo difícilmente accedía, no tanto por egoísta sino más bien por miedo a las represalias que habría si nos descubrían. Cuando decidía arriesgarme, no sabía cómo sostener después la conversación ni mucho menos propiciar una nueva plática.

Hasta hoy caigo en cuenta de que quizás ése sea el origen de mi dificultad para entablar, incluso ahora, nuevas relaciones, a diferencia de mucha gente para quien socializar es un acto natural, casi un reflejo. En la primaria me convertí en una niña solitaria. Normal, pero solitaria. Nunca me consideré ni me he considerado especial o diferente, sólo tímida, al contrario de lo que pueda parecer. Eso sí, cuando encuentro a un verdadero amigo, no lo suelto nunca, pase lo que pase. Soy de esas personas que aplican aquel viejo dicho de las abuelas: “Conmigo poco y bueno”.

Filled with Truth

Taylor is a gifted story teller. He uses stories to pass on wisdom and encouragement to his children. But you don't have to be a child to benefit from his stories. They are valuable for anyone.
Structured in relatively short chapters that each answer one of his child's questions, this book is perfect for being read alone in multiple sittings or outloud to your spouse/friend/or child. Taylor's wisdom is evident, but so is his sense of humor. Don't miss this book.

Touching the head and the heart.

Wonderful book that touches both the head and heart. Each chapter is a self-contained story that is meant to illustrate a particular point he is attempting to get across to his "children." He uses story to communicate these truths which make them not only affect one's mind, but affect their heart as well.

As a teacher, Daniel's work, especially this book, has effected the way I communicate truths to my audience. I use truths, wrapped in story, to let others feel and know truth.

Smart about the First Ladies

After buying and reading "Smart about the Presidents", I was very interested in reading "Smart about the First Ladies". Like the other "Smart About" books, I was very intrigued with this one, too. The facts about the first ladies was educational, and I loved the pictures and illustrations. I have shared this with my grandchildren. I highly recommend this book.

Roland believes that the Man in Black knows and can be made to reveal the secrets of the Dark Tower, which is the ultimate goal of Roland's quest. The Waste Lands sees Roland and his fellow travelers continuing the quest for the Dark Tower. They journey through imaginative landscapes, over astounding obstacles, and meet with and confront a unique and fully drawn cast of characters, both human and nonhuman. Reader Frank Muller gives voice to the characters with a thoroughly engaging precision, accuracy, and great humanity and with an edge that drives the story onward and seems to amplify King's skill as an author. Not your King fare...

A marvelous read. Not the usual King fare. But With all the skill and mastery Of king, the story craftsmen. Blending elements of horror, fantasy, the old west, and dystopian faraway times, King has woven a continuous yarn here that takes the reader on a journey that once begun must be completed. Highly entertaining. King weaves worlds and sets atmospheres that culminate here. I can't wait to read the next book.

Very different from King's other books but the Dark Tower series is quickly becoming my favorite series. The books are longer but definitely worth the read. I look forward to coming home and following Roland and his Ka-tet on their adventures.

The continuing adventures of Roland of Gilead.

This is a second reading of this book for me (via Kindle). Following the adventures of Roland of Gilead as he forms his Ka-Tet with Eddie and Odetta/Detta. It's a good read from a master American author who steps out of his horror shoes to write a grand adventure. Well worth a read.
