Nourishment for the soul

I have heard Betty Smith read her "Greek Dialogues" on several occasions in Louisiana, in California, and in Greece. No matter the location or the myth, Betty's readings have touched me, leaving me inspired, awed, challenged, and delighted. Betty's dialogues are in her words a way to answer "The human thrust for a sacred refuge." Her words have been life giving water, healing balm, the sweetest of honey, and also the fiery heat of challenge.

The Greek Dialogues: Explorations in Myth are a compendium of Betty's years of work with these ancient myths. There Is Gold in This Book!

I am a huge Steve Vai fan, so I feel the need to grab everything he releases. I had read Steve's legendary 10-hour Guitar Workout and 30-hour Guitar Workouts when they were originally released (and re released) in Guitar World. When I saw that they were being released in a book I knew I had to have it in my guitar library. I would not recommend this book to beginning guitarists because some of the sections of the workout do not tell you specifically what to practice. So you may need to have a teacher to help you decide what exercises to do. For intermediate or advanced players who are used to structuring their own practice this book is a gold mine! My favorite parts are actually the mental aspects that Steve discusses near the end of the book. These are essential to becoming a true master of guitar. Like the Satriani Guitar Secrets book (I bought both at once), this is so reasonably priced that you should stop thinking about it and just buy it.

Excellent guitar book

This is a great book that gives you a lot of exercises to practice. Be prepared to spend a lot of time doing these exercises if you want to get the benefits this book can provide.

The only thing that I think would be better is if there was a clearer explanation of how to plan out or schedule the 10 hour and 30 hour workouts. They are each labeled as such, but then the exercises and descriptions of how to do them are presented with no real idea of how to schedule your 10 or 30 hour workouts. Obviously you wouldn't do 30 hours straight, but since it is labeled as "30 hour" it would be nice to know if the 30 hours is intended to be done in as short a time as possible, or over the period of a few weeks.

Otherwise, the book and the exercises within are highly recommended.

Love this workout. A must for anyone wanting to work on finger independence, dexterity, sweeping technique, speed, and the mental process of not over doing it and hurting your hands. Steve Vai is one of the best music teachers alive.
