About the Author
Richard S. Sharf has been a counseling psychologist at the Center for Counseling and Student Development at the University of Delaware for 37 years, providing counseling to university students. He also was the internship coordinator for the Psychology Doctoral Internship program. In addition, he taught graduate courses in counseling in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In writing THEORIES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELING: CONCEPTS AND CASES, he corresponded with over 70 experts on theories of psychotherapy to ensure that the book is accurate and up to date. He is also author of APPLYING CAREER DEVELOPMENT THEORY TO COUNSELING, 6th Edition ((c)2014, Cengage Learning).

Highlighting how career assessment and counseling is important for optimum well-being.

This book seeks to provide several different benefits. First, Dr. Sharf seeks to explain the history of career counseling and the differences/similarities with clinical mental health counseling. Second, Sharf breaks down different career theories by chapter, which is extremely helpful for understanding differences in theory and what is applicable for specific career issues. Finally, Sharf seeks to show how to best integrate different career theories for advanced effectiveness. This is probably the best aspect of this book as the charts and research base shows how specific theories are more effective than others. This is an excellent book for any career counseling and development class or anyone seeking to work with people with career issues.

Not gripping reading.

I had to read this book for a required class. I cannot recommend it unless you are really, really interested in doing only career counseling. The book is probably adequate, but most of the theories it describes are repetitive and not exactly rocket science. I doubt their usefulness to either clients or counselors. Much of the information here could easily be summarized, leaving room for a more in depth exploration of the process of actually counseling clients.

Overpriced, dull and redundant

I think this may be the most bland textbook I've come across in my graduate studies. Redundant and flat, this is a text I'd never refer to and the cost was outrageous! I'll be looking for a better book to add to my professional library as a resource!
