"The 'typical' students in my Western Civilization course [are] fresh out of high school where most have been taught that History isn't much more than dates, names and memorization. Therefore, the Chronology tables in the Perry text provide some comfort to students. However, they act as an entre to 'real' History, which Perry does very well."

About the Author
Marvin Perry, now retired, taught history at Baruch College, City University of New York. He has published several successful Cengage Learning texts, including WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY (senior author and general editor); WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY; the leading Western Civilization reader, SOURCES OF THE WESTERN TRADITION; AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE; SOURCES OF EUROPEAN HISTORY SINCE 1900 (senior editor); HUMANITIES IN THE WESTERN TRADITION (senior author and general editor); and WORLD WAR II IN EUROPE: A CONCISE HISTORY. His scholarly work includes ARNOLD TOYNBEE AND THE WESTERN TRADITION (1996); coauthor of ANTISEMITISM: MYTH AND HATE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT (2002); coeditor of ANTISEMITIC MYTHS: A HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ANTHOLOGY (2008); and coeditor of THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF ISLAMIC TERRORISM: AN ANTHOLOGY (2008). Myrna Chase, emerita professor, dean of liberal arts, and provost of Baruch College, City University of New York, is a specialist in 19th and 20th century western European history, with a special interest in England and France and the history of political and social ideas. She published ELIE HALEVY: AN INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHY (1980). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY she contributes the chapters on the Industrial Revolution, the Industrial West, and Imperialism.
James R. Jacob was Professor of History (now retired) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. His publications include ROBERT BOYLE AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and HENRY STUBBE: RADICAL PROTESTANTISM AND THE EARLY ENLIGHTENMENT (1983). James R. and Margaret C. Jacob have jointly edited THE ORIGINS OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RADICALISM (1983). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY he contributes the chapters on the Renaissance and European Expansion.
Margaret C. Jacob is a well-known scholar in early modern European history, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her most recent book is THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY. HUMAN CAPITAL AND EUROPEAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1750-1850. She currently teaches in the history department at UCLA. Her publications include: THE NEWTONIANS AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and THE RADICAL ENLIGHTENMENT: PANTHEISTS, FREEMASONS, AND THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION (1981). James R. and Margaret C. Jacob have jointly edited THE ORIGINS OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RADICALISM (1983). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY she contributes the chapters on the Reformation, the National State, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment.

The Tenth Edition is Poorly-Written and Not Worth Its Cost

I have spent the past several decades studying history, and as such I own a lot of books about various historical subjects. However, my primary area of interest is Western Civilization, and as such I have read the eighth edition of "Western Civilization: Ideas, Politics, and Society," and I purchased the ninth edition several years ago. I was impressed by the ninth edition; I have read it often, and I have frequently used it as a reference. However, after having purchased the tenth edition, I am no longer impressed.
While I realize that history marches on and history books which cover modern subjects need to be kept up-to-date, this tenth edition seems more like a "money grab" by the authors. By comparing the ninth and tenth editions, it is clear that the authors simply added additional verbiage to several of the passages, which was often unnecessary, and that would lead me to believe that the authors were attempting to artificially increase the apparent number of changes in this edition in order to pseudo-justify the need for academic institutions to ditch their existing editions in favor of this new edition.
What's more, the tenth edition was very poorly edited. A large number of passages throughout the book are written quite poorly; a first-year college student could easily have re-written many of those passages with greater clarity. As a result, this edition reads like it was rushed to market.
On a side note, after having used the two books in this series for several years in various editions, I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the book's maps. Since the books have only a few colors to use when publishing maps, the author's usually employ geometric patterns rather than colors to differentiate geographic regions on the maps. As a result, readers are forced to spend a great deal of time trying to discern which pattern goes with which feature, rather than the publisher spending a few extra dollars to make the maps more legible.
In summary, the tenth edition was a major disappointment; I will be returning my copy. But regardless of my choice to return my copy, the overall quality of the tenth edition is so poor that it in no way justifies its exceedingly-steep price tag.

Great condition, perfect timing and loved it! This is definitely going to be one textbook I will keep! GREAT organization and very educational without being dry. One of the best I have come across thus far!

A Good Read

I needed this book along with several others for a college course I was taking. The book was in good condition. It wasn't missing any pages and had little to no damage.
