About the Author
Philip Watson studied Chinese at Oxford and London, worked in the Painting and Calligraphy department of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, and was briefly a lecturer in Chinese at Edinburgh University, before joining the British diplomatic service. His career, which included postings in Beijing and Hong Kong, culminated in responsibility for Asia, the Americas and Australasia. He was appointed CMG in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 1999. Watson's current interest is translation from Classical Chinese of the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

Interesting travel diary of a 12th century poet

This is a very interesting diary of a journey undertaken between July to Dec 1170. The famous poet Lu You was assigned to take up an administrative post in Sichuan. So he set off from his home near Shanghai for this 1800-mile journey. He used the Grand Canal and the Yangzi river. Along the way he kept a detailed diary with observations of famous sights and the persons he met.The book is illustrated with many beautiful photographs and a vivid commentary.

Great travel diary from China's ancient past

This book is very readable, and is presented beautifully with gorgeous, modern-day pictures of places which the author travelled to. Gives a wonderful insight into Song dynasty China.
